VSS is in with the TCM in the transmission. If you have tyre pressure senders then the light is telling you of a malfunction in that area . ABS will not operate unless a wheel stops under brakes and then only that wheel receives attention from the ABS unit. So if you are on a hard surface road and braking normally there will be no ABS action at all. Under heavy brakes when the wheels start to skid you will feel a pulsation in the brake pedal and that is the indication that the ABS is working. You will in affect (when the ABS is working) take a greater distance to stop than normally expected.

My ABS light is shining on dashboard, what can this mean? My break fluid level is good. Also my breaks are working fine.

There are a few sensors and components which feed into a computer.Even though your brakes seem fine, there is something wrong.ABS takes sensor inputs from the wheel speed, sends them to a computer, compares them to how hard you want to brake, and applies/releases the brakes as fast as possible to prevent skidding. You normally cannot feel it.So even though you can stop, something is giving a bad signal somewhere. The computer is usually not the problem though. The sensors and brakes are under the more extreme usage conditions.Greg

How much do I expect to pay for new brakes

It will vary on the brakes, depending what needs to be replaced, rotors, calipers, pads. I would say around $200-$300 per axle. I've seen tranmission services going for $79-$99.

Pedal to the floor, topped up fluid - brakes OK, warning light ON

If you have an ABS computer, unplug it for a few minutes, the light should clear.

I had new brakes put on the front of my 2004 ford taurus and now there is a ton of brake dust coming off of them, i never had this problem before

New brakes take a while to bed in so you will see more brake dust than usual. If it carries on after a few hundred km/miles then the new pads are probably cheap and will wear a lot quicker than good quality types.

You could upgrade to an exotic ceramic brake pad, but under normal driving situations this is overkill, expensive and will not give you "impressive" results.
The Mo-Par OEM stuff is really quite good!!!
It's more important to make sure that you flush out old fluid at least every two years and make sure that slide pins and all hardware are in good working order.
