SOURCE: running good then bad
Sounds like you need a good tuneup. An engine that is misfiring usually indicates fouled or worn out spark plugs or wires. Also, the engine timing. Try replacing the spark plugs making sure they are properly gapped. If you have your vehicles operators booklet it will tell you the spark plug gap or if you don't have the booklet your auto parts store counter person can tell you. Firs change the plugs and see if there is any improvement. If there is and your satisfied your done! If you are not satisfied try replacing the spark plug wires next. Be sure to match the wire lengths and only change one wire at a time! If this doesn't solve your problem have the engine timing checked by your mechanic.
I hope this will help you.
Have a great day!

You can take the egr valve off and clean it by removing the torx screws, Be careful not to tear the gasket that is under base plate of eger, after you remove the screws. You can purchase a new gasket that goes between the egr and manifold. These egr valves are expensive but you can clean them. Be sure to clean under the egr valve in the manifold to get rid of the carbon build-up. After scraping it loose, crank it up for a few seconds to blow out the sut. Timing and gears do not go bad on a 3800 engine. Check for vacuumn leaks at the three port valve on firewall. Follow the cruise vac. to it. They turn grey and fall apart and will leak. Mine has 298.000 miles on it. reply

Odd advice from a mechanic
Maybe they have experienced a high failure rate
on your type vehicle, but you need a properly functioning
EGR Valve,to reduce NOX and pass inspection.
So replace it
