I dropped my ignition key and it broke in half, can I still get a copy made with the two pieces?

I dropped it on the concrete and it broke in half just below the top of the key.

This happened to someone I know. They actually took it to an expert and they got it fixed with just the two pieces!...Sounds difficult but hey, it's worth the shot. Or else you'll need to replace the ignition cylinder. Hope this helps.

My key broke inside the door lock of the passanger door of my lincoln ls 2000.how can I replace door lock?

You might be able to retrieve broken part of key. Take a bobby pin or paper clip and straighten, or if you have a scribe.. I will include picture of a scribe. Push the cover of lock cylinder in with scribe, bobby pin or paper clip and make sure you can see the remaining part of your key...if the key is not twisted i would put asmall drop of super glue on the part of key that came out and while holding cover of lock open insert and hold against broken part of key for abt 30 seconds and key should remove with brokenpart attached...if key is twisted, use a small flathead screwdriver to glue to piece of broken key.
Replacing a key is much cheaper and far less time consuming than replacing lock assembly. If you can not get broken part of key out. I will tell you how to replace lock assembly...good luckkey-broke-inside-door-lock-passanger-lssthgpi25gedqz0c32oowfn-4-3.jpg

The key to my 2001 lincoln ls that opens the trunk and starts the car broke in half will it still start the ignition

How you gonna turn key if half is broken in switch? Go to dealer with your vin number and proof of ownership and get another key.

And remove the broken piece so you can insert the new key.

91 dodge dynasty some one tried to steal it they broke the ingnishen my question can I change out the ingnition we out removing the air bag &steering wheel? I have access to all screws & pin locks signed...

yes you can, 1991 Dodge Dynasty Ignition Switch

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Tamper-proof Torx driver
  • Ignition key
Instructions
    • 1 Remove the plastic cover from the steering column. The cover is two pieces held together by screws that thread through the bottom piece of plastic into the top piece. Remove the screws and pull the cover off. This exposes the large square ignition switch. The key cylinder connects to the ignition switch.
    • 2 Remove the tamper-proof Torx screws that secure the ignition to the steering column using a tamper-proof Torx driver. You can get this type of Torx driver from your local auto part store.
    • 3 Pull the wiring harness out of the ignition switch.
    • 4 Place the ignition key into the cylinder and turn it onto the auxiliary position. Push the metal pin on the ignition switch in using a screwdriver and slide the ignition cylinder half way out of the ignition switch. Turn the key to the off position and slide the cylinder all the way out of the ignition switch.
    • 5 Place the key into the new cylinder, slide the cylinder into the ignition switch half way. Turn the key to the auxiliary position and slide the cylinder in the rest of the way. Remove the key from the cylinder.
    • 6 Press the wiring harness onto the ignition switch.
    • 7 Secure the switch to the steering column using the tamper-proof Torx driver.
    • 8 Place the covers back onto the steering column and secure them using the screwdriver.

Broke a key off in my ignition and can't remove lodged piece. Have replacement but can't turn old ignition to 'acc' to unlock. Are there any other methods for removing/replacing old ignition?

Locksmiths use a tool that resembles a thin piece of a coping saw blade. That tool is slid along side the key stub, turned so that the teeth grip the stub, and pulled outward.

They also use a thing that is like a dental pick, only with a smaller hook.

I've heard of supergluing a toothpick (or the other half of the key) to the stub of the key, but you would have to be very, very careful not to get any glue on anything but the end of the broken piece of the key. You also have to be able to hold it long enough for the glue to set.

I've also read that lubricating the key stub and lock with a lock lubricant helps with extraction, but that would clash with the superglue method.

As far as removing the cylinder, it has to be in the 'ACC' position. The only alternative to this is to remove the entire switch assembly and replace it with a new/used unit. This would mean having to add another key to your keyring(s). I believe that removing the steering wheel is necessary (or very helpful) when replacing the switch on that car.

Good luck from Detroit, MI.

Car will not start. steering wheel won't move. Lights do work. ignition won't turn on. car seems locked up. dodgemuncy@aol.com

The earlier Fords have a half moon shaped pot metal piece in the steering column that engages the ignition switch located just downstream from the keyed tumbler. When this piece breaks the key will turn, but it will turn easily with no resistance which you would normally feel as you turn the key. You would need to replace this piece to correct your problem. This requires removing the steering wheel to access the broken piece. This is a starting point. Hard to say without not being able to actually see your truck. Good luck. This half moon piece is prone to breakage.

Bmw 740 il key broke in half at remote part car

Yes it is, but just having the key near the ignition is enough to start the car. If you can turn the ignition with the broken key, hold the broken part in your hand and see if it will start. Hopefully the chip isn't damaged. I know that when GM keys are replaced, they glue the old key under the dash to make it work. Hope this helps.

You'll have to get the broken piece out

Then buy two or more keys at the dealer, and then, insert into ignition ,and program, assuming you have an owners manual to look that up
