SOURCE: crossfire, ashtray

Remove the cover on the center console. This is the large bezel that covers the center section of the dash. Radio must be removed first to expose 2 screws that secure it in place. It hooks at the top. Be carefull with the connectors for the console switch group.

Remove the 4 screws attaching the ashtray to the center console.

Press the ashtray housing over to the left and then remove it toward the right.

Disconnect the ashtray harness connector for the courtesy light.

SOURCE: How to replace top (3rd) brake light on Kia Optima 2007

This answer makes a mountain out of a mole hill! There are two screws directly under the light accessible from the trunk (in two hole, the wires come out of one of them)- just unscrew and you can manuever out without taking off the whole back panel.

Behind the dash near center. Around the ashtray region. You will have to remove a lot of the dash to access it.
