Where is the pcm connection on my chrysler crossfire

I got a code # 0400 which is a bad EGR valve and i still get the same code after replacing the part . I want to unplug the connection to the pcm in the car to reconnect it to see if I can reboot the pcm

yes you can do it yourself the egr valve is located on the exaust manifold closest to the fire wall unfortunately it has to be replace. it has an electronic lead to it and is vaccum operated to replace it is not a difficult task. the part can be purchased at a Napa or Oreilly's for alot less than at a dealership. just make sure your gasket surfaces are clean for replacement of new gaskets. if you have a code reader than can reset the code that is a benefit however if you do not you have to have a scan tool to reset the code. please rate the solution....thanks

I have a 2005 Chrysler 300. The engine light comes on from time to time -- sometimes it will stay on for a week or so and then go off for at most a day or two. I had the code read yesterday and the feedback was "EGR pressure flow is low." My car has about 65K miles. Is this a typical problem with this car? I was told replacing the EGR valve would fix the problem. How easy is it to replace an EGR valve on this vehicle? Once replaced, do I need to reset the computer --- if so how do I do this? If it is easy to fix, could you please provide step by step directions and show me location of the part in question that needs replaced?

Same thing happened to me. It was giving me problems starting it. It died on me at the stop sign last week. I kept driving. On Friday it shut down on me while doing 60mph on the hwy. I towed it to the nearest dealer. The said they had top replace the cranck sensor and a cam sensor. I paid $1,043.01 for that. Today I couldn't start it....

You can try cleaning it. Go to your local parts store and buy a can of brake cleaner. Remove the EGR valve and spray it into the valve and let it set 8 hours. Pour out the cleaner and clean the carbon off with a wire brush. Reinstall the valve and see if that helps. If not, you will have to buy a new one and it will not cost $316 if you DIY.

could be carbon buildup or a bad EGR valve. Did you disconnect the battery to let the computer learn the new part? However that doesn't rule out these an open or short in the 5 Volt reference circuit Open or short in the ground circuit Open or short circuit in the PCM controlled voltage circuit or a bad pcm or you got a defective egr valve

P0300 Random Misfire, means any cylinder at anytime.

P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow. EGR passages are full of carbon
clean passages and misfires may go away

P0443 Evaporative Emission Purge Control Valve circuit.

now just because a code is present doesn't mean a part/sensor is bad, just where to look and to test.

OBD Code P0403refers to
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is controlled by a vacuum solenoid. The solenoid is supplied ignition voltage. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the vacuum solenoid by grounding the control circuit(ground) or driver. The primary function of the driver is to supply ground for the object that is being controlled. Each driver has a fault circuit that the PCM monitors. When the PCM turns a component on, the control circuit voltage is low, or close to zero. When the component is turned off, the voltage on the control circuit is high, or near battery voltage. The PCM watches for these conditions, and if it doesn\'t see the proper voltage at the proper time, this code is set.

Possible causes of OBD code P0403

P1406 Code - EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit
The PCM monitors the EGR valve pintle position input to ensure that the valve responds properly to commands from the PCM and to detect a malfunction if the pintle position sensor and control circuits are open or shorted. If the PCM detects a pintle position signal voltage outside the normal range of the pintle position sensor, or a signal voltage that is not within a tolerance considered acceptable for proper EGR system operation, the PCM will set DTC P1406.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC

Ignition 1 voltage is greater than 10 volts.
EGR Feedback is less than 0.14 volt at any time.

OR

EGR Feedback is 0.4 volt greater or less than the EGR Closed Valve Pintle Position when the Desired EGR Position is commanded to 0%.

OR

Actual EGR Position is 20% greater or less than the Desired EGR Position.
Any of the above conditions are present for longer than 20 seconds.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS

The PCM will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test has been run and failed.
The PCM will store conditions which were present when the DTC set as Freeze Frame and Fail Records data.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE MIL/DTC

The PCM will turn the MIL OFF during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic has been run and passed.
The history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles have occurred without a malfunction.
The DTC can be cleared by using the scan tool Clear Info function or by disconnecting the PCM battery feed.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Check for the following conditions:

Open EGR ignition filter circuit.

An open in the EGR ignition filter circuit will cause EGR Position Error to vary erratically while the EGR valve is operating. With the ignition ON, a test light should illuminate when connected between ground and the EGR ignition filter circuit at the PCM connector. If not, locate and repair the open in the EGR ignition filter circuit.

Excessive deposits on EGR valve pintle or seat.

Remove the EGR valve and check for deposits that may interfere with the EGR valve pintle extending completely or cause the pintle to stick.

Poor connection or damaged harness. Inspect the wiring harness for damage. If the harness appears to be OK, observe the Actual EGR position display on the scan tool while moving connectors and wiring harnesses related to the EGR valve. A change in the display will indicate the location of the malfunction.

Reviewing the Fail Records vehicle mileage since the diagnostic test last failed may help determine how often the condition that caused the DTC to be set

TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the Diagnostic Table:

Verifies that the malfunction is present.

The PCM contains a recirculation diode which filters the EGR ignition feed for the EGR valve. The recirculation diode is connected to the ignition filter (EGR ignition feed) circuit. If the ignition filter circuit is open, Actual EGR position may be erratic when compared to Desired EGR position. An open in the EGR ignition filter circuit will cause DTC P1406 to be set after an extended period of time.
If DTC P1406 will only set under certain conditions, the malfunction may be intermittent; refer to DTC P1406 Diagnostic Aids. If an intermittent wiring problem is not present, check for a poor connection at the PCM or the EGR valve. If the connections are OK and DTC P1406 continues to set, replace the EGR valve.

This vehicle is equipped with a PCM which utilizes an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM). When the PCM is being replaced, the new PCM must be programmed.

P0301 Code - Cylinder #1 Misfire Detected
A P0301 code means that the the car's computer has detected that one of the engine's cylinders is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #1.

Symptoms may include:
the engine may be harder to start
the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate
other symptoms may also be present

Causes: A code P0301 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plug or wire
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Running out of fuel
Poor compression
Defective computer

Possible Solutions:
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

For that reason it needs to be carefully metered into the cylinders (via the EGR valve) so as not to adversely affect the engine's performance. (Too much EGR and the engine won't idle).

If you have a P404 , then the EGR valve is likely an electrically controlled EGR valve instead of a vacuum controlled EGR valve. Also, the valve will usually have a feedback system built into it that informs the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) what position the valve is in; open, closed, or somewhere in between. The PCM needs to know this to determine whether or not the valve is operating as needed. If the PCM determines that the valve should be operating, but the feedback circuit shows that the valve is not open, this code will set. Or if the PCM determines the valve should be closed but the feedback signal indicates that the valve is open, this code will set. Now enough of all that technical stuff. Basically tou will need to test your voltage at your EGR valve. I'm not sure of the scanner has but some you can use to test the circuit. You will need to make sure you are getting about 5 volts to it. If not you have either a bad ground going to it or a short somewhere in the circuit. Worst case is you could have a faulty PCM (not likely). You may have a faulty EGR valve as well but I would do my best to make sure of this before I would replace as the electric EGR's can get expensive. I hope you got all this and that I hope it helped...Good luck. One other thing you could have carbon buildup in the EGR causing it not to work correctly as well. If you can clean the build up that will help as well.

What does that mean?

Symptoms

There may be no symptoms of a P0404 DTC other than the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) or check engine light. However, Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems are inherently problematic due to carbon buildup in the intake manifold, etc. This normal buildup can lodge in an EGR valve, holding it open when it should be closed. If this is the case, the engine may idle rough, or not at all. If the valve has failed and is NOT opening, then symptoms would be higher combustion temps and as a result, higher Nox emissions. But the latter symptoms aren't going to be noticeable to a driver.
Causes

Usually this code points to either carbon buildup or a bad EGR valve. However that doesn't rule out the following:

  • Open or short in the 5 Volt reference circuit
  • Open or short in the ground circuit
  • Open or short in the PCM controlled voltage circuit
  • Bad PCM (less likely)
Possible Solutions
  1. Using a scan tool command the EGR valve to open while watching the actual EGR position (it will probably be labeled "desired EGR" or something similar). The actual EGR position should be very close to the "desired" EGR position. If it is, then the problem is likely intermittent. It may have been a lodged piece of carbon that has since dislodged, or it could be a bad EGR valve winding that intermittently opens or shorts as the valve temperature changes.
  2. If the EGR "desired" position is not close to the "actual" position, then unplug the EGR sensor. Check for a good 5 Volt reference voltage to the connector. If it doesn't show a reference voltage, repair an open or short in the 5 Volt reference circuit.
  3. If there is a 5 volt reference voltage, activate the EGR with the scanner, monitor the EGR ground circuit with a DVOM (Digital Volt/Ohm meter). It should indicate a good ground. If it doesn't then repair the ground circuit.
  4. If there is a good ground, then check the control circuit. It should indicate voltage that varies according to the percentage that the EGR is open. As it's open more, the voltage should increase accordingly. If it does, then replace the EGR valve.
  5. If the voltage doesn't increase incrementally, then repair open or short in EGR control circuit.

YOU NEED TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR 5-10 MINUTES FOR FAULTS TO CLEAR COMPLETELY..HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE AFTER REPLACING AN EGR VALVE..IT WAS A TECH TIP FROM CHRYSLER ENGINEERING..THE EGR VALVE WAS THE PROBLEM,BUT THE PCM WOULD NOT LET THE CODES GO EVEN AFTER CLEARING THEM WITH SCAN TOOL..ALSO CHECK CONNECTIONS AT EGR CONNECTOR FOR SPREAD PINS

Will not pass emissions code p0401 infuficient egr flow


EGR flow is monitored by the PCM by it looking for a reaction in the FRONT O2 sensor in responce to the command given to the EGR valve. The linear electronic EGR valve sends a return signal to the PCM indicating the relative position of the step motor and hence how far open (or closed) the EGR valve is in responce to the PCM command. The PCM expects to see (within a set of given parameters) a change in the O2 sensor reading (change in exhaust gas make up) after the EGR valve is commanded open or closed. If it doesn't, or that change is not within the expected parameters, a code will be set based on the skewed data. Generally a "insufficient flow" code will be set by:

1.Faulty EGR valve (sticking, or "lying" to the PCM about the actual valve position)
2.Faulty electrical connection at the EGR valve (causing false data)
3.Clogged EGR passages
4. Bad read from the MAP, or TPS, causing the PCM to misinterpret the EGR data based on faulty operational data from the other sensors
5. (Very rarely) A marginally "slow" O2 sensor. (PCM does not "see" the change in exhaust make up quick enough and interprets that as poor EGR flow.)
I have found that normally this code means that the EGR is not opening the amount that it has been commaneded to by the PCM. Normal cure for me lately has beed to repalce the EGR valve and to clean out the passages while the valve is off. The Tech 2 is able to command the EGR open and show the commanded opening and the actual opening. When this code is present the actual and commanded do not match closely at all. Insufficient EGR Flow problem


Specifically DTC P0401 is "Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Insufficient Flow". Now this is where we have to be careful when we read a code. In this case it is not saying the EGR valve is bad, it's saying the EGR flow is too low. Now it could be because the EGR valve is bad. Or it could be a clogged EGR tube or a broken vacuum line. This is why you have to be careful and check the whole system before you go changing parts. The PCM tests the EGR system during deceleration by momentarily commanding the EGR valve to open while monitoring the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor signal. When the EGR valve is opened, the PCM should see a proportional increase in MAP. If the expected increase in MAP is not seen, the PCM notes the amount of error that was detected and adjusts an internal fail counter towards a fail threshold level. When the fail counter exceeds the fail threshold level, the PCM will set DTC P0401. The number of test samples required to accomplish this may vary according to the amount of detected flow error. Normally, the PCM will only allow one EGR flow test sample to be taken during an ignition cycle. To aid in verifying a repair, the PCM allows twelve test samples during the first ignition cycle following a scan tool Clear Info or a battery disconnect. Between nine and twelve samples should be sufficient for the PCM to determine adequate EGR flow and pass the EGR test. To check the system first you need to remove the EGR valve and if it is clogged or broken. If it is, clean or replace it. If it is okay, then remove the EGR inlet tube from the exhaust manifold and the EGR outlet tube from the intake manifold. If either or both are clogged, clean them out or replace them. Then check the ports in the manifolds themselves to see if they are clogged. If so, clean them out. When you are done, disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds to clear the code and drive the car to see if the light comes back. This should take care of the problem. If not, then you will need to put a scan tool on the car and see what the EGR control system is doing wrong and correct it.
The Valve on this car is electronic, so, unfortunately a vacuum pump will not work for testing.
If you have a scan tool, you can command the pcm to open the valve to see if the valve itself is working.There are really only4 things to go wrong with these things, PCM, wiring,the valve itself, or plugged passages. I have never seen the pcm cause this problem, or the wiring for that matter. If you say you have pulled the EGR and checked the intake passages, then I would be pretty confident in saying the the egr valve itself is bad.
