Question about Saturn SL

1 Answer

Piston rings My 97 saturn has piston rings that need replacing. I don't know much more than that because a friend took my car apart to find out why I was leaking oil, and came to said conclusion. But it has been over 2 weeks since he's had my car and I want to know how to do this myself.

cylinder, their are 2 types, one where you squirt marvel mystery oil into the cylinder and screw the compression gauge in the crank the engine a few times and one where you don't use oil. The dry test should have at least 150 PSI and the oil test should have at least 160 PSI.

You don't replace just piston rings on a motor
with 15 years of cylinder & valve wear
The motor needs to be bored & completely
Should never get involved with friends or
family for anything

Replace piston rings

With friends like this.... If you seriously want to try it-I hope he laid everything out in an orderly way-my advice would be to buy a Haynes repair manual for your Saturn. There will be a section or chapter on engine rebuilding-read it thoroughly. Do not hesitate to consult friends or mechanics on any part or procedure you are not clear on. Engine assembly lube, a good torque wrench, acetone or brakleen- a good cleaner that leaves no residue, check out engine assembly videos on youtube, lots of rags and wipes-cleanliness of every part and fluid passage and threaded hole is absolutely's ok to give up on the engine-don't give up on the car, just swap in a used engine if it overwhelms you. Finally, give your friend a black eye, lol.
Good luck, buy the manual.

My 05 equinox is using oil but don't see oil on surfaces where parked &no oil on engine where is it going

If you don't see any oil under or on the outside of the engine then it has to be burning it thru the exhuast due to worn piston rings or piston rings that have'nt seated yet.

My 1993 sl1 4door saturn blows blue smoke when accelerateing but not at ideling but its only when at a higher speed

Blue smoke certainly means it's burning oil.The best test to determine the source and severity of the problem is a "leakdown test". Better than the older compression test which doesn't give as complete a diagnosis. mechanics today use the leakdown test to positively identify the source of cylinder compression leakage, whether rings or valves or head gasket.
Any good shop can do the test. About a half hour, maybe 1 hour job,at most.
The only remedy for worn rings is an overhaul.

neicie neici, No, this is not true. You can purchase a crankshaft sensor from any auto parts store. Just provide for them the year, make, model and engine size of your vehicle and they can provide a sensor for you. If you ask, they may tell you where it is located on the engine making replacement easier for you. I don't know why the mechanic told you this. Good luck with this.

My mitsubishi canter 4d32 engine had all its 4 top compression rings broken ie one from each bore what can possibly cause that and what amount of smoke or mist should i expect from the breather after...

As an engine wears the ring lands on the pistons wear also. In addition to ring land wearing on the piston, the bore in the cylinder develops a wear pattern. Has the engine been rebuilt?
If the pistons have worn ring lands and were re-used it may allow the rings (new or old) to twist in the grooves and catch on any ridge in the cylinder, thus breaking them.

When the engine is apart you must check for proper ring land wear. You need to consult the piston manufacturer for proper wear specs, typically around 0.006in.

If you're getting a visible amount of smoke/oil from the breather after the rebuild something is not right. The rings are not seating. I would definitely recommend boring/honing the cylinders and going with a new set of pistons/rings so you don't have to pull it apart again. A little more now can save a lot in the long-run.

Hello, My son has a 97 saturn sl 4dr that has rear disc brakes that has given up the ghost. He has purchased an 01 sl 4dr that has rear drum brakes. can we swap the axles on these cars. I hate drum...

Don't know the answer but consider a few things

You now have newer model saturn
That means totally different electronics,
throughout the car

Braking Systems or any vehicle systems
are designed by engineers to do specific
things a certain way ,and millions of dollars
are spent getting the final product to the dealer

Your not doing a restoration or modification,
as you would on, say a 55 chevy here

So my answer is, you don't have one thing I can
think of in the braking system that would be compatible
from disc to drum, when you consider the ABS System
Electronics and now way you have the same master cylinder
or wheel cylinder diameters, volume, metering valves etc.

Someone may give you a very technical answer, that it has &
can be done by someone on this site.

I personally could engineer it,but wouldn't, it is a daily
driver and 10 years old. You don't spent any time or money
on something like that.
They don't even make Saturns anymore

I pulled my plugs & discovered all 4 were bad. However #3 & #4 cyl. were fouled, esp. #3. (the rpm's did not even change when I pulled the plug wire off prior to removing plugs). #1 & #2 looked...

cfor saturn due to poor piston ring seal. Goto a chevy dealer and tell them you need the stuff to clean the rings in your saturn they should know exactly what your talkin about. You pull all 4 plugs pour that in there and let it sit for atleast 24 hours. then turn engine over with alot of rags over the spark plug holes to catch most of chemicle and let sit for a bit to dry out. Put plugs in and go. that stuff eats the carbon buildup that causes the rings to seize up. Second white plugs in that motor ar again common as it runs pretty hot. If you put plugs in it and it runs good them no need for wires. and the rumor is correct. you have plugs, wires and a coil pack then under the coil pack is the ignition module. hope that helps ya

How hard is it to change the oil rings and piston rings in my94 saturn sc2?

on a level of 1 to 10, this would be very high up there. if you don't have expertise in building engines i would not recommend you try replacing the piston rings yourself. it requires you to remove the engine from the car and completely disassemble it down to a bare block. once you've accomplished that you then need to put it all back together the right way, make sure all tolerances are correct, and with everything torqued to specfication. There is a LOT involved when replacing piston rings so be sure you know what you're getting into before even remotely considering doing this on your own. i can tell you though that if you have to pay a professional shop to do this, it's most likely going to cost more than the cars worth to get it running properly again.
