I see no one has tried to help. I am interpreting your problem as the Shift indicator shows the wrong gear. The pointer usually has a slotted opening with a screw locking the pointer to keep the pointer locked in the proper position. In this scenario, the pointer just needs to be physically reset. You will need to remove any panels covering this pointer.
Scenario 2 , Trans was locked in Park. Someone tried to force gearshift to move when Brake pedal was not stepped on and they stretched the shift components. May have stripped old parts beyond adjustment.
Scenario 3, Does not shift gears correctly while underway. Can be due to shift solenoids in transmission or connector to same solenoids. In this case clean connector to trans or replace solenoids.
