Question about Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Any advice please

This morning I was pulling out of my driveway - I drive a 97 Pontiac Grand Am SE 165000kms The car sped up a bit on it's own, then the steering went and the car shut down. I started it again no problem but now it won't rev past 4000 - it hits 4000 and then bounces down to 35000 and back up to 4000 over and over. I also hear a clicking sound

Its normal, its called fuel cut off designed to keep the engine from over revving while in idle or with no load.clicking might be a lifter noise that has collapsed.

SOURCE: engine won't start!!!!!

It's possible the "anti-thielf" system has been failing and went out while you was driving. If the ignition key has a chip in the shaft of the key your car has anti-thieft. It's possible the system doesn't reconisethe igntion key and shut the system down. Try using another igntion key if it came with 2 keys. If the engine started you'll need to get the other igntion key replace.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand prix wont start; unable to remove key

On many cars, if the battery is dead, it locks the key in the ignition. Put a battery charger on the car or replace the battery and give it a shot.

Good luck.

Run into autozone or Pep Boys for free trouble code scan, then write it down and get back to us, or if obvious what problem is diagnosed, replace the part.

I went to drive my 2001 pontiac grand am se and the low coolant light came on, i was not even a mile home so turned around , pulled into driveway oil light came on i shut car off open hood and oil w

make sure your plastic coolant container mounted on inside right fender is at least half full. Keep your eye on the temp gauge and make sure the car doesn't overheat. These sensors are very touchy and sometimes cause a fault when actually there is no real problem. Also make sure you didn't knock loose the oil pressure sending unit connector, located near the oil filter. Happy Motoring!

I have since put more oil in my car but a knock in the engine developed because I drove it while low on oil

pontiac cars are mainly junk (sorry but its true) especially grand am. Sounds like you threw a rod or bearing, but don't feel bad it would've happened whether or not you ran it low on oil, you just sped up the process :)

I put 2,720.00 worth of work into my 97 Pontiac grand am. Engine light is flashing the car sputters and might get up to 40 mile per hour I took it out on the road again and got it up to 75 mile per hour...

Sounds like who ever did the work on your car needs to go back and check the plug wires to see if they are going to the right plugs. and check the fuel filter, and fuel pump pressure. I would also check the Catalytic Converter to see if it is stopped up, if so replace it. Check the throttle position sensor with an ohm meter, if bad replace it. Check the oxygen sensors as well. I am running out of Ideas, so I hope this helps.

To me it sounds like the bearing for the pulley is gone. But are you one hundred percent sure that it's coming from the alternator?
