Question about 2000 Volvo S80

Knocking noise

The engine knocks on start up and continues until turned off. Digital reader says cylinder 1 is misfiring. Been told by a few people that the lifter might be collapsed or stuck, could this be the problem, and is there a way to fix it with out having to rip it all apart to change the lifter?

Update... It is not the lifters they were all good looking and it was not the variable valve timing pulley either. Looking for more reasons why it would be knocking, going to try the vacuum pump next like Akitanovic suggested and yes Reynaldo the oil was the first thing I checked it is fine still clean looking and no silver bits in it.

Yes the lifter or one of the valves could be damaged. No the valve cover and maybe the cylinder head would need to be removed to repair depending on what the actual problem is.

SOURCE: Car is knocking

Sounds like a bad connecting rod bearing or a carbon knock, de-carbon the engine and retest for noise, if it is still there the engine will need to be torn down the crank refinished and new bearings installed.

SOURCE: Hello! I have V70 TDi 1999. I have knocking noise

The knocking noise of these engines is usually from vacuum pump. Just remove the 6 torx screws from vacuum pump cover with a hot engine and let the oil drain from it overnight. Be careful not to loose any part of vacuum pump - has 2 metal one way valves, one plastic valve and two rubber parts one big seal and a washer. Remember how it was installed and clean those parts with care before assembly. The hose on vacuum pump cover doesn't need to be removed - rub clean cover with cotton cloth. The tractor-like knocking sound was gone on my car!

When i turn on my 04 taurus. It starts makin knock sound , i replaced my lower intake n i think i missplaced the spark plug wiring

If the spark plug wiring is not correct, the engine will misfire and that will create erratic combustion, which is a shock to the cylinder, which results in a load harsh noise. Locate the number 1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap and trace each wire to the spark plugs. The firing order will be listed on the intake manifold. Make the correct wire to spark plugs attachments as needed.

Car started knocking really bad got a cylinder 2 misfire code after opening coolant bleed valve with enging hot

Okay, it may be due to overheating, that may be the noise you heard, lets hope. first allow engine to cool, open radiator cap or the resivoir cap, which ever is the fill, remove the bleeder at top hose and fill radiator slowly until coolant comes out bleeder.

note if water pump was replaced due to leaking and engine was overheated at that time then it may be a good idea to replace the thermostat .
after filling is done start engine and allow it to run. watch temperature if temp start to climb past half way shut engine down and let sit for 5min. then restart and check level, in res do not open cap . feel air from fan and see if it is getting hot, this may take up to a half hour but do not drive,

A few questions, does this jeep have an electric fan?
when you heard the knocking was engine temp hot?
If you start jeep cold does engine knock?
Did this jeep get a new thermostat with waterpump job?
did it overheat when pump went bad and why did water pump get replaced?

sorry for all the questions ,just trying to get all the info to help you .

No if the oil light has flickered you have oil pressure loss some time just belive the sensor do help us out. lifter do not cause oil pressure loss pressure is built in the rotation of the crankshaft. The knock under the plenum will point you to that cylinder that is affected, (main bearing) as for a 1995 the injectors can only cause a misfire but no knocking noise, will they honor the warranty

Engine knocking right after a tune up on a 2000 hevy blazer LS

I would say look at each of your plugs. Knocking noise usually come from pre-ignition. So your most likely not getting a good spark in one of the cylinders.

You could have:
Fouled a plug with a piece of engine dirt
Changed the gap while placing it in the engine
Broke a plug wire
Also check to make sure the plugs are in the same heat range (ie exact replacements)

Well the reason with out hearing or seeing it sounds like you have either droped a valve or done a big end ,which is the white metal bearing slippers on the bottom of the con rod which is connected to the piston in 1 of the cylinders and in turn makes a bad knocking noise before doing damage to the rest of the motor BUT you dont have to buy a new motor as get a few quotes on engine rebuilds as done by a good reco shop it will last for years ..
IF you get a s/hand one then make sure you hear it running for at least 1/2 hour and make sure its good oil pressure and dosent overheat and no noises from engine at all, also check the engine number with the Police Just in case???? engine can be hot in more ways than 1..
Let me know how you get on and if i can help anymore Ron

Cylinder misfiring

Hello and welcome to FixYa. check you engine for any noticeable signs of oil excessive in 1 particular area if you don't see any excessive oil stain. Try doing a valve job inspect lifters and push rods make sure they are not warped or clogged replace valve cover gaskets that should take care of most of your issues I would also have timing checked. If knocking continues. replace Rings and check for damaged main rods on the crank shaft in the bottom of the engine which could be knocking around in the oil pan Loosing Oil thru a bad gasket no worries easy fix but burning that much oil is definately a sign of time for engine overhaul or replacement motor. I hope this will help get you going. Please Rate Me. And you can always Ask Me. aymloekh0fg4hpz2e87n86udvs4fowqwshuaaaaasuvork5cyii=

2003 Nissan Murano - Fuel problems - knocking sound

If the knocking did not go away with the higher octane fuel then you may have other problems. A dirty fuel injector oor a misfiring spark plug can also cause knocking in a modern car. A faulty sensor may also be causing the wrong fuel / air mixture in the cylinder... check out the cheapest fixes first.
