Timing chain possible . But more likely Camshaft Phaser for the variable valve timing , do you change you oil regularly ,these can get clogged up . They are controlled by oil pressure.
Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) System The VCT system consists of an electric hydraulic positioning control solenoid, a camshaft position (CMP) sensor, and a trigger wheel. The CMP trigger wheel has a number of equally spaced teeth equal to the number (n) of cylinders on a bank plus one extra tooth (n+1). Four cylinder and V8 engines use a CMP 4+1 tooth trigger wheel. V6 engines use a CMP 3+1 tooth trigger wheel. The extra tooth placed between the equally spaced teeth represents the CMP signal for that bank. A crankshaft position sensor (CKP) provides the PCM with crankshaft positioning information in 10 degree increments. The cam timing can become advanced to much an cause a low compression problem. You could do a compression test an that would tell you. this vehicle should have at lest 150 psi .

Both cam sensors replaced for ses/vdc/slip lights, hard starting when hot, still have ses light, rough idle at stops, smooths out when driving

First thing I would do is check oil level. If its low fill to correct level. retry. Low oil level will cause cam actuators to stick & your problem can happen with SES light. Second I would make sure you got updated cam sensors from dealer. El-****-o sensors can cause this problem also. Third off If you can fined out what the codes are in the PCM...... Nissan ignition coils that start to go bad will do this also. Throttle body that wast or lost its programmed learn can do this also.... So please see what codes are stored will help the way to look.

  • There are two Camshaft position sensors. The one this is for is the one by the oil dipstick on the LH side of the engine. If you replaced the other you need to replace this one as well. Both are recommended, in other words when changing one it is recommended to change the other as well.

Can u tell me what the problem of this code PO340

I have a 1999 BMW 740 il My SES light came on so I hooked up my OBD code reader p0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction is what came up. so I went to the BMW parts department and bought the Camshaft Position Sensor.
I Replaced the with the new. My SES light was still on so I hooked up the OBD reader again hoping it may reset my SES light but it didn't what did happen is the OBD reader came up with the same code (p0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction) witch is what I just replaced. now I'm at a loss. I'm not sure how to reset my SES light and if I just replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor why dose it the OBD code p0340 still come up. Any suggestions?

Where is the camshaft position senosr

Hi it is behind the cam cover below the cam pulley wheel.

It does depend on the model but once the cam cover is removed you will be able to see it quite easily.

Hope this helps, if not please get back to me with engine size etc

The engine oil light measures oil pressure rather than volume. The senosr couldf be bad or your oil pump could be failing

Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors

MAke sure you replaced the right sensor and it's the proper design.(If you bought a generic part, it;s probably the wrong thing) I replaced my cam and crank sensors with the generic ones from AutoZone and they had no effect. Took it to Nissan, they replaced both at my expense, AND REPROGRAMMED THE ECU. That fixed that problem SES light hasn;t come on in 6 months....Fingers crossed
