Slow start up. i have replaced fuel filter, starter, battery, spark plug change and wire change. The alternator as well. People tell me it can be fuel pump but i hear the pump before i start the car. they also say maybe fuel regulator or crankshaft sensor. i have to hold the ignition key for a good 5 seconds to start. what can it be?

check fuel pressure
if ok check spark
if ok than you need to check compression

three things needed for an engine to work
fuel pressure, good spark and good compression in the cylinders

sounds like your alternator could be going bad, most major autoparts stores will do a free battery, starter and alternator test, and tell you what your problem is. just make sure you ask for a full charging system test otherwise they will probably just check the battery (if the battery tests bad you wont get an accurate test on your alternator, so replace the battery then have them run the test again right away) If it is the alternator, dont let it go too long, a bad alternator can kill your battery, a bad battery can kill your alternator and starter, and a bad starter can kill a battery.

no promises that this is your problem but it is where I would start, there are other possibilites as well, such as a weak feul pump or clogged fuel filter, if your engine isn't getting enough gas it will dog down and stall. But like I said above I would start with the battery/alternator/starter test.

Changed starter and alternator and still wont start on 1988 grand am

There are few things that you will have to check. 1) Is the battery properly charged. 2) Are you getting spark at the spark plugs, when you crank the car to start. 3) Is there proper fuel in the car. ---------------- If the battery is not charged properly the car will not start.Check the voltage of the battery .It should be exact 12volt. If there is no spark coming when you crank the engine then its the problem of either the spark plugs or the coil pack.the spark plugs gets power to spark from coil packs. Also check the fuel pump and fuel filter. If the fuel pump and fuel filter are worn out then it will not supply the fuel properly to the engine and this results in no-start problem. If all battery, fuel pump and spark plugs checked out OK then its time to check the wiring connections between the battery to starter and battery to alternator. This will help. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Car wont start

Check your starter motor, sounds like a dud winding in it. Then starter reeds to be overhauled / replaced.

Can you bump start it or is auto? If it's a stick shift you can try to bumpstart it, if it starts then its a good chance that the starter is fried.

2005 xA won't start

there's a possibility that the battery is run down. If it's the original battery, chances are you need to replace it. I'd have the alternator checked as well, however the most likely problem is a worn out battery. It's not uncommon for batteries that have been maintaining their charge through the warmer months to go bad once a cold weather comes through. As for the stinky exhaust, in your attempts to start the engine with a run down battery, the engine probably loaded up with fuel, thereby causing it to run rough and stink till excess fuel was expelled from the cylinders. Hope this helps.

Hard to start the first time of the day.

what you are describing is a slow start. Start your vehicle and remove the positive battery cable. if the truck dies than change your alternator. your alternator may be going bad not allowing the battery to keep a charge through the night.

If it is good than remove your starter and have it tested. any auto parts store can test it.
