Diy fix leak power steering

My old granny car was in a front-end accident many years ago. reservoir drains slowly while left parked. minimum fluid added alleviates groaning noises, but still steadily leaks. i'd like to pinpoint the leak and fix it myself please!

You have the steering pump,steering hoses
steering rack-- I guess
Somewhat easy to see & get at, except to replace
a rack, that most likely is leaking. Check behind the bellows
by outer tie rods for oil
I would change the rack & put on all new hoses on a car
that old
You can pretty much know what is shot on a car that age
Your going to need to do suspension bushings,ball joints & all
to have a safe car
Pretty much a restoration project of the complete front end
Every time you run low on fluid you wear out the steering pump
a little more & have the groaning noise & part of it is a failed
steering rack that has worn & tightened up also

The best bet is its trans oil. The gearbox has crushable washers/gaskets, the bolts may just need to be tightened slightly to crush the gasket and seal.

How do i install my power steering return line


With the engine cold, loosen the steering reservoir filler cap to allow air into tank. Take the lowest fitting loose and let it drain into a bucket under the vehicle. When finished draining remove Line fitting at reservoir. Remove any brackets holding the line in place and remove line from vehicle. Take the line to automotive supply and buy proper replacement using old line to verify fit. Purchase enough recommended power steering fluid to replace what drained into bucket. Install new line in reverse of removal steps making sure seals (washers and/or "O" rings) are properly installed. Dispose of old fluid safely.
To fill reservoir and line: While filling reservoir with engine running turn steering wheel from left to right until wheel stops. Continue filling and turning until all air is out of system and reservoir is at the proper fill level. Check for leaks.

Power steering fluid


Remove return hose from reservoir, plug port with vac. cap. Rig extension hose from removed line to a gallon container. Have someone start the car and slowly turn wheel all the way left and right, , system will pump old fluid into container, at same time fill reservoir with new fluid until drained fluid runs clean. Approximately 2 - 3 qts. for service

Kudos to you for your repair and diagnostics with the old cardboard trick. You didn't specify what model and engine your Pontiac have, but I can give you some general guidance. If it's the typical GM set up with the reservoir mounted on the pump, I'm afraid it might not be a DIY job. In these situations the pump's pulley will need to be removed from the pump shaft with a special puller in order to remove the reservoir. However, if the reservoir is remote mounted, meaning not attached to the pump, by all means get a new reservoir and change it. In the remote mount situation, you'll only see one hose attached to the reservoir, usually with a plain 'ol hose clamp. Put a drain pan under the car, remove the fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster (every good mechanic has one in their tool box), remove any mounting fasteners, unscrew the hose clamp and remove the reservoir. Reverse the procedure to install the new part. Once installed, fill the reservoir to the proper level with power steering fluid, start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel fully from one side to another (do this many times). The pump will probably whine until all the air is bled from the system. Recheck the fluid level and top off as necessary.

Steering hard to turn to the left like power steering is out but turns ok to the right. Checked power steering fluid. It is OK


bad steering problems,,your steering rack most likely,but,have you recently been stuck in ditch? when wheels are straight, look at front of car when parked. do wheels look funny? one going one way, and the other going the other? may be alignment. is it leaking any fluid on either side of the front of the car? drivers side? passenger side? if it's not out of alignment,,,wheels out of alignment,,the steering rack is the problem. it may be faulty. if not leaking fluid,it may still be bad. first i would make a visual test look under the vehicle while someone turned the steering wheel to right and left while car is in park,emergency brake on!! look at the steering arms while they turn the steering wheel from right to left. no fluid leaks? any resistance in turning the wheel? any leaks,if so,go to leak and repair with steering line replacement.no leaks? suspect a bad steering rack. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com i love to volunteer

The power steering isn't working. The reservoir was empty and I added power steering fluid and it still very hard to steer

How do i flush the hydraulic steering system


You really can't flush out the steering system fluid other then siphoning the fluid out of the steering pump reservoir. This is the easy way.
The hard way:
Remove the filler cap from the top of your power steering system then disconnect the reservoir's hose. It should be located on the bottom of the reservoir. The hose can be tough to remove, so make sure you have plenty of patience.

Replace the reservoir's hose with another hose. It should lead to an empty container. You'll use this container to store the old power steering fluid as it leaves the reservoir. Lift the front end of your car off the ground by using a car jack.

Add new power steering fluid to the reservoir. As you add the new lubricant, it will force the old lubricant into the tube you've connected to the bottom of the reservoir.

Climb into the drivers seat and rack your steering wheel back and forth. The wheel should be locked in place, allowing only a slight range of mobility. This will help the extra lubricant within the power steering system to drain.

Watch the empty container. It should fill with old lubricant. Once the old lubricant has been flushed and you see clean fluid replacing it, you've finished the hard part.

Disconnect your hose and move the container. Replace the original reservoir hose. Pour new, clean power steering fluid into the reservoir. Rack your steering wheel a few more times to squeeze out air that might be trapped in the lines. Replace the filer cap and close your done.

After I replaced the power steering pump and reservoir on my 2002 Jeep, I still get air in the system. Where could it be coming from?


Your problem could be a pressure side hose that has a rupture that only leaks in extreme conditions. Inspect to replace with new to repair problem. First make sure you have removed the pump caps off of the hose fittings. If ok, it appears you may have a stuck valve in the rack assembly. Replacing the rack should solve your problem. ------- The new pump should be self-bleeding by turning the wheels left and right. Let sit over night to release air bubbles, recheck fluid level.------ Check the tension of the drive belts on the pump, as they may be loose. The power steering pump and reservoir is located on the front of the engine driven by one of the fan belts. There is a removable cap on the top with a dipstick attached. With the engine off, fill this up to the full mark with power steering fluid. Replace the cap, start the engine and check for leaks. On the back of the pump are two hoses either one could be leaking. REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Wipe the power steering cap and area free of dirt. Remove the power steering cap.

2. Use a siphon pump to remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir.

3. With a helper in the vehicle, raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

WARNING :POWER STEERING FLUID, ENGINE PARTS, AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM MAY BE EXTREMELY HOT IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN RUNNING. DO NOT START ENGINE WITH ANY LOOSE OR DISCONNECTED HOSES. DO NOT ALLOW HOSES OR POWER STEERING FLUID TO TOUCH HOT EXHAUST MANI FOLD OR CATALYST.
4. Locate the power steering cooler attached to the crossmember support plate. Slide back the clamp and disconnect one of the two power steering return hoses at the power steering oil cooler and drain fluid in an appropriate container.
5. Have the helper turn the steering wheel back and forth quickly several times to force as much fluid as possible from the steering gear.
6. Reconnect the hose at the oil cooler using the original clamp.
7. Lower vehicle so the vehicle tires are not contacting the ground.
9. For proper fluid fill and bleeding air from the power steering system:

a. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range using Mopar power steering fluid (ATF+4) p/n 05013458AA.

b. With the engine OFF and the vehicles tires off the ground, slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth (lock to lock) slowly 20 times to force fluid into the steering gear.

c. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range.

d. Start engine and let run for a few seconds, then turn oft engine.

e. Check fluid level and add if necessary.

f. Start engine, and slowly turn the steering wheel lightly contacting the left and right stops.

g. Stop the engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

h. Lower vehicle, start engine and slowly turn steering wheel lock-to-lock.

I. Stop engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

j. If fluid is extremely foamy, allow vehicle to stabilize a few minutes, then repeat steps "i" and "j" until the fluid level remains constant after running the engine and turning the steering wheel from lock to lock.

10. Inform the vehicle owner/operator that a steering vibration may be noted for a few hundred miles until the air is completely removed from the steering system.

I have a 97 taurs with a steering problem. It makes a humming noise that gets louder the faster I go. It pulls to the right, an when I go around a left corner it feels like it just doesn't want to turn...


check to see if you have power steering fluid. if your low fill it up. (most cases thats all it is) check around for any leaks or parts to the power steering unit for and damage (hoses, pump, rer, rack and pinion, any seals or such. you might have a leak somewhere. when your looking for leaks fill the res up with power steering fluid. turn the car on. and have someone turn the wheel so get the fluid to build up pressure in the system.
