YOU WILL SEE A HOLE IN THE CAM GEAR THAT A 3/8 BOLT WILL FIT INTO. PUT A BOLT INTO THE HOLES OF BOTH CAM GEARS. THEN LINE UP THE CRANK PULLEY KEYWAY AT ABOUT 12 O'CLOCK WITH THE MARK ON THE ENGINE BLOCK.

MAKE SURE TO COMPRESS THE CHAIN TENSIONER AND RELEASE IT WHEN THE CHAIN IS IN POSITION.

Hello gortek_onl. My name is Roger and I will help you. GM does not provide a clear picture of the timing marks. Only that special tools are required to replace the belt. That being the good news. Now for the bad. The engine in you car is known as an interference engine. What that means is when the timing belt breaks or becomes loose and jumps time. The pistons will interfere with and bend any valves that happen to be open. This not only damages the valves but also the pistons. So to make a long story short. If the belt broke and the engine was turned over or crank over with the engine out of time you did damage the engine. Pull the front valve cover and look at the valve springs. If they are down and not up close to the camshaft.than you will need to pull the heads for a very expensive repair. ( Valve job ) I attached the best picture i could find of the timing marks. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. THis way I know it was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger4e9ea56.jpg

SOURCE: Resetting timing after replacing head gasket

Do you have the timing belt on and the tensioner set correct? If so, just rotate the crankshaft around until the notch on the crank sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the oil puimp housing (TDC). Now the camshaft sprocket's notch or pointer should be at the top and exactly in line with the mark on the rear timing belt cover. If it's not correct, you'll have to release tension on the belt, remove it, and set the camshaft to the mark. But before you do that, turn the crankshaft back (counterclockwise) just three notches. Then you can turn the cam to line up, then return crank to line up, and continue with belt installation, setting the tension, and re-checking timing marks after rotating the crankshaft a couple of revolutions. Once you know the timing is set to TDC, no further timing adjustments are possible, because the computer controls timing. I don't know how important it is, but just to let you know: Chrysler recommends after belt removal or replacement that one perform the "crankshaft and camshaft relearn alignment procedure" using the DRB scan tool (Chrysler's scanner device) or equivalent scan tool.
And the firing order on all four cylinder engines is the same: 1 3 4 2.
I hope this helps you out. Cheers.

The engine will not start and backfires

  1. Have your timing chain, and timing sprockets checked. The timing chain probably snapped or jumped timing if you have broken teeth on the sprockets.
  2. If the timing checks out, have the cylinders compression tested and check for bent valves, etc.
  3. Check the firing order and spark plug orientation:

Did you recheck the engine valve timing (Timing Belt) after you finished? If so check it again. Timing has to be set on #1 top dead center. You probably know this if you did the head gasket.
