Get yourself a compression tester and remove all spark plugs and proceed to check the compression for this motor the readings should all be above 110 psi, the car may have jumped a tooth on the timing belt and requires a new belt to be installed.

have it scanned at a real shop that will save you alot of money from back yard mechanics... i have had the problem of the coil plug wire connecting plug

Check the EGR valve pipe connection and mounting gasket, also check the EGR pipe connection at the exhaust manifold. Check the exhaust manifold for cracks and gasket leaks, hope this helps, let me know.
