Question about 1998 Ford Taurus

Resivoir slowly going down but not showing any signs of leak outside of engine, today i had the oil change to see if coolent in oil! none. not over heating,checked the coolent seals not leaking ?

No coolant leaks outside of engine!

Usually if there are no external leaks, and you are loosing coolant, the engine is burning it out the exhaust pipe.

I just had the same problem. Ford design the intake manifold with plastic water crossover which cracks. The coolant will leak onto the top of the block and and then down the back of the engine. This intake design is a known defect and was ocvered under by Ford for 7 years past the date of mfg. The crack either is in the crossover or the thermostat housing. I happed on this when I found the same leak and traced it back to the thermostat housing. I changed the thermostat, but it leaked worse. You can pickup a aftermarket for $200 and it's about 4-6 hr job to replace.

I don't have the same coolant system that Ford has listed, my is different for my 2000 Ford Taurus SE 6cyl 3.0L. Where can we find the right part. I want to the junk yard 3 years ago and find one but the problem with that one is the top keep popping off. I have replaced the top three times and I am pissed because I love my car but I keep having to spend money on this system. H.E.L.P!!

This sounds like the crank seal, the engine doesnt have to be removed, in order to get to seal is like replacing the ttiming belt, and once in the timing belt i would replace the crank and cam seals, also do the timing belt, and maybe the waterpump, you will need to remove the crank pulley and then the timing covers then align timing marks for timing belt before ou remove it, with timing belt off the crank pulley then slides off the crankshaft and the seal is behind it, the cam shaft gear unbolts and the seal is behind the gear, once the gears are off then you will be able to remove the seals from the engine,heres a few diagrams to help. good luck and i hope this is helpful,60d826b.gifca916fa.gifcb2cb5a.gif

coolant reservoir slowly going down! freeze plugs-( no leaks)-( no) coolant leaks outside of engine, no white smoke, changed oil today and no coolant! coolant reservoir sits on tire wall.

Generally speaking, if you have engine oil in the cooling system, you have a leak somewhere in the engine, which could be a head gasket.
Is there any sign of coolant in the engine oil ?

I haves 2004 Pontiac grand prix I was told I had a busted head gasket, took it yo the shop they said I have a leak in my elbow and now my service engine light is on.


just check your oil if its milkey looking then coolent is getting in and more than likley its a head gasket, if not then check for water leeks on the engine block and heads not the hoses if none there check hoses if its in the elbo as they said i assume they mean the one where the thermastat is located those are 19.95 at advance auto, maby cheaper elswhere, easy to change and yes a leak can cause a check engine light to come on, easy way to check for a leak is to use a black light and yellow glasses can be bought at parts stores, the engine coolent will appear to glow and finding the leak may be easyer depending on its location

Losing antifreeze changed thermostat and resivoir cap


Check you oil for signs of coolant contamination. If coolant is present in the oil, you may have a leaking head gasket or intake manifold gasket. If there is no sign of coolant in the oil, the antifreeze could be leaking past the intake gaskets and into the combustion chamber. It could also be a leak that only shows up when the engine is running, and you are losing the coolant as you drive. This kind of leak is very difficult to locate. You will have to look for signs of antifreeze around the upper and lower intake gasket area with a strong flashlight. Also check for signs of leakage at the upper and lower radiator hose connections and the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator. If you smell antifreeze inside the car, check the carpet for dampness caused by a heater core leak. Sounds like a lot of work, but these mystery leaks as I like to call them, can take repeated inspections before you finally locate them. I hope I have been of some help. When i start my car it very slowly leaks oil from a censor on the top drivers side of the engine above the coolant housing and right behind the powersteering resivoir.


Is it the Quad4 engine? If so, that is where your oil sending unit is located (sends the signal to the oil-pressure gauge). Same thing happened on an 1995 Z24 I had. It takes minutes to replace and is not very expensive.

My 2oo7 jeep wrangler keeps needing oil, but shows no sign of leaking and no sign of burnning it.


how fast is it dissapearing? if it is dissapearing fast check your radiator to see if it is going into the radiator if so that is a blown head gasket. if it dissappears slowly the oil is breaking down. my brother turned me on to casterol oil. it doesn't break down like normal oils

Oil consumption


Not exactly a solution, but check your coolant bottle and see what color your coolant is. See if it looks like it is contaminated with oil or if it looks and smells fine.

Red temp light comes on. i look at resivoir and it is empty , i fill it with coolent and the light go,s off and then the coolent leaks out again , i can see it dripping from the bottom of engine

You probably should take it for repair as soon as possible. It sounds like your lower hose may be leaking. If you overheat the engine it could cause you a lot more problems:)
