The engine is leaking (sizzling) engine coolant behind the pulley system to the left of the water pump. What could it be?

Pressure test the system and check for leaks, use a radiator pressure testing tool kit. Sounds like the radiator may have been damaged by the parts breaking and flying about.

It is the water pump most likely,they have ,what they call a weep hole in the bottom under the pulley,so they will leak out to let you know to change them right away.If it is on the top coming from the intake area,it would be the intake,they are also bad to leak,but look at the pump,under the pulley.

SOURCE: 1999 2.0L VW Jetta coolant leak behind crankshaft pulley

The MK3 VW's are prone to failure of the "coolant flange", which is located to the right of the valve cover, and will have 4-5 hoses and or sensors sprouting from it.

I'd be willing to bet that this is the source of your leak, not the cam pulley.

The part is inexpensive.

Check to see if the intake is leaking out of the corner and leaking down behind the water pump. If not the timing cover could be leaking. The timing cover gasket also seals the water port that goes to the water pump.

Check around the front of the intake manifold right behind the alternator on the drivers side.These intakes are known to leak,because of the new coolant and gaskets don't mix.

I have coolant leaking from the bottom pulley? what could cause this?


You don't say what make and model you have, but on many engines now, the water pump is behind the timing cover which is the same cover behind the serpentine pulleys. So it is probable your water pump is leaking in there, and coolant escaping from behind the cover. It is not usually economic to overhaul the pump itself.

If your engine has a timing belt, I'd advise changing that too as it has to come off.

How do i tell if waterpump is bad the water is evporating everyday


    • 1 Park your car overnight and put a large white piece of paper underneith your car. In the morning check the paper. If the paper is wet with liquid, you could have a water pump leak.
    • 2 If the paper has green (in most cases) fluid on it, there is a good chance your vehicle is leaking coolant (sometimes refered to as "water"). In many cases, when you are leaking coolant it could be coming from the water pump.
    • 3 Turn the engine off and open the hood.
    • 4 Locate the water pump pulley. The pulley is the round part that the belt is attached to. To find it, look for the belts. You will see more than one pulley. Your car will have an alternator with a pulley and perhaps an air conditioner, power steering and smog pump pulleys. If you are unsure, ask your mechanic to point out the water pump pulley.
    • 5 Grab opposite ends of the round pulley and check for "play" (looseness): Try to rock it back and forth. There should be no give. If there is, the bearings are going and it's time to replace the water pump. By the time you can feel play in the water pump pulley, you may also be able to hear the bad bearing when the engine is running - there may be a low-pitched grinding noise coming from the water pump pulley.
    • 6 Visually check the water pump (it's located behind the pulley) for signs of a coolant leak. If the water pump gasket is leaking, it must be replaced. This is a good time to get a new water pump, too, unless it was just recently replaced.

It sounds like the shaft seal on the water pump has gone bad. Replacement of the water pump is the only way to repair it.

Change water pomp on a cadilac 1998 deville


First of all,you will need the Northstar waterpump removal tool, You can get this from most reputable auto part stores.

You need to remove the air filter housing and ducting to gain easy access to the pump.

Remove the shield covering the pulley and belt. The belt is easily removed by levering the tensioner pulley.

The water pump is located at the lower radiator hose manifold where you will also find the thermostat.Remove the manifold cover and you will see the water pump.

Insert the removal tool over the pump making sure it is locked in position.You will need to use a breaker bar on the removal tool and turn the tool CLOCKWISE to release the pump (1/4 turn), or if you imagine the breaker bar being vertical, push towards the windscreen of your car,it takes quite a bit of force to unseat the pump hence the use of a breaker bar.

Installing the new pump does not require as much torque as removing the old one.
Tighten the new pump to 73 ft.lbs. making sure it is seated properly before tightening.

Don't forget to clean out the water pump housing prior to installing the new pump and don't forget to include a new water pump gasket and housing cover gasket.

It is also a good idea to install a new thermostat while you're at it.

5.3L Grand Prix Engine
  1. Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.
  2. Remove the battery from the engine along with its tray.
  3. Take the drive belt out of the engine.
  4. Loosen and remove the three bolts to the water pump and remove the pump, throwing away the gasket.
  5. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and install the new water pump with a new gasket, tightening the bolts to 89 inch pounds (10 Nm).
  6. Reinstall the drive belt and the battery with the battery tray.
  7. Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant. Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
3.5L Grand Prix Engine
  1. Partially drain the coolant from the cooling system.
  2. Disconnect the surge tank outlet hose and remove the drive belt.
  3. Remove the idler pulley and the water pump pulley, making sure to note the locations of the bolts as you remove them as they are various lengths.
  4. Loosen and remove the bolts to the water pump, also taking note at their locations, and remove the pump.
  5. Install the new water pump with a new gasket, tightening the bolts to 124 inch pounds (14 Nm).
  6. Reattach the water pump pulley, tightening the bolts to 106 inch pounds (12 Nm).
  7. Reinstall the idler pulley, tightening the bolts to 37 foot pounds (50 Nm) and install the surge tank hose and drive belt.
  8. Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant.
  9. Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
3.4L and 3.1L Grand Prix Engines

  1. Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt guard and the accessory drive belt.
  4. Loosen and remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the water pump pulley.
  5. Remove the water pump bolts and remove the water pump.
  6. Install the new water pump along with a new gasket, tightening the bolts to 89 inch pounds (10 Nm).
  7. Reinstall the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts to 18 foot pounds (25 Nm).
  8. Reattach the accessory drive belt with the drive belt guard.
  9. Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant.
  10. Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Coolant leak behind bottom pulley


Could be water pump weephole leak or water pump gasket under water pump trailing down timing cover and exiting behind crank pulley or water . Worse case, leak in timing cover. Water crosses through timing cover to and from water pump to engine block.
