Try a different shop
$2000. so far---- for diagnostic time??? & no results
If you use Google & type in 2006 Cadillac CTS POO17
there are plenty of sites, blogs & manufacture answers to the problem for your motor
I would guess the timing chain jumped- as odd as that is ,compared to a rubber belt that does that all the time
You really have been at a shop that has never checked bulletins
or gone to the internet BEFORE a road test or opening the hood
You can't work on todays cars that way ,you need help up front
Most people fail to use full synthetic oil, have no idea what is put
in the motor verse what should be & have no idea when the oil
was changed
If you fail to change your oil at 3 to 4,000 miles the Cam Actuators
fail or Solenoids clog up & you have similar issue to what you have
People think you can drive todays high tech vehicles & forget
what we did from the 1950's thru 1980's Still have to do lots
of oil changes & lots of testing though out the year BEFORE
you have issues

my wife had a 96 chrysler cirrus with the 2.6 v6 engine. the distributer was under the intake manifold and had the cam position senser in it. this is the hottest area in the engine, very bad engineering, replaced the distributer four times, each one averaging four months, spent $2500, finally sold car and would never buy another chrysler product.

You got ripped off by the mechanic. A good mechanic can pinpoint the problem by using a scan tool. Take vehicle to autozone or similar and have it scanned for codes this will give you a idea what is wrong. I believe the problem is exhaust related because of the blinking light.

I recently had an engine light on my 2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 and the dealer replaced the thermostat and less than 2 months later, the engine light is back on. I don't trust this dealership as my car...

U don't mention what this light is for Id say its the for the over flow tank so make sure its topped up to the full mark or otherwise its overheating..Once again U don't mention what country you're in if your here in Australia you will probably need a cooler thermostat. A very common problem with imported cars if U know a good handyman he could drill a small hole on the side of the thermostat about the size of a match head will be sufficient!!!!!

My jeep is driving fine, but it starts very hard in the morning - I have spent so far almost $2,000 in various parts at the dealership, but the problem is still there. Any suggestions?

If you would share with us all that was done , it may help us to diagnose the problem more efficiently.

I spend $2000 at the dealership , doesnt help much.

My first gut feeling is going to be a fuel pressure leak... overnight the fuel pressure could leak down... and cause the engine to starve for fuel durring morning start up.

You can check this by doing the following next time you do your morning start up proceedure.

Turn the key on , but do not attempt start the vehicle yet.
turn the key back off.
turn the key on... until you hear the fuel pump pressure has built again.
turn the key off. and then back on ... and after the pump stops... try to start it.

Will the knock sensor make any difference to the way the car runs? it has a crack in it.

Your car is not OBD-II, some dealers still have the Subaru Select Monitor required, some haven't kept them. Your local mechanic is unlikely to have spent $2,000 for a tool that only works on 15 to 20 year old Subarus. You can read the check engine light codes without any special tools though, see http://legacycentral.org/library/literature/codes.htm

The fuel filter is right next to the windshield washer fluid tank.
