It is likely the electronic ignition control module. When they go, they just go bad and usually when you are driving.

If it was a smaller vehicle it could also be a timing belt but your's has a heavy duty valve train so no worries there.

SOURCE: settings for points for 454 engine86 chev c30

You have a 1986 454 engine with an old style breaker point ignition distributor, GM has not used a breaker point ignition for their V-8 engines since 1974, is that an older distributor or something after-market?

The ignition points dwell angle for that engine should be set at 29-31 degrees dwell (a dwell meter would be the most accurate way to set the ignition points), or a .019 in. point gap.

The spark plug gap for that engine would be .035 in. and the timing should be set at 10 degrees before top dead center.

I have a 1986 454 C30 silverado dual fuel tanks . my fuel pump is split so got a new but the new 1 only has one 3/8 in port , and the old has two a 3/8 and 1/4 , is the 1/4 one a return line

Short answer, yes. It is to reduce the chances of a vapor lock forming by returning vapor and hot fuel back to the tank and keeping cool fuel circulating through the pump.

92 suburban 454 v8 failed smog .

First I suggest that you have a code check done Most large parts outlets will do this for free.Control module problems will usually set a code. Just offhand, I'd check the egr valve to make sure the valve is clean and properly opening/closing. If the inspection readings were close but not perfect, sometimes "cheating" a bit by adding 2-3 oz of acetone per 10 gal. of fuel will clean it up a bit. It will not harm the system in that concetration, and will also clean the injector.

95 Chevy Silverado.

To bypass the other switches, run a wire from the battery to the starter bendix and if it cranks then the problem is in the wiring or the switches you mention.
