SOURCE: oil found in breather tube

when you decelerate the vacuum caused sucks the air/oil from the crankcase, lubricating the engine,if excesive you get smoke from the tailpipe.then rings are suspect.(blowpast)
also if too thin (5/30) an oil is used in an older engine (10/40)it will have the same symptoms.

Volvo v50 t5 oil leak

Most likely it is the breather tube and/or the oil trap box (integrated into the oil filter housing). if the box is plugged or the diaphragm is torn the box will send oil to the top of the engine via the hose.

do you also have a high pitched whistling noise?

Volvo has extended the warranty for the oil trap box (filter housing) to 120k miles and/or 10 years.

VOLVO V50 OIL ON CAMSHAFT COVER

I will try and simplify the problem. I have an oil leak, which I traced up the back of the engine to the cylinder head area.
When I removed the top plastic cover on top of the coil packs I found oil in every recess next to the coil packs. The crankcase breather pipe was also off. The source of the leak is not evident, but it is definetely above the cylinder head gasket area.

Oil leak

How long is a piece of string ? without a good look under the bonnet i couldnt say but make sure the engine breather is clean and not clogged as this would cause a build up of back pressure which will cause the oil top leak from everywhere possible

Pressure building in crankcase & blowing oil out the dipstick pipe and other weak seals. Appears that parts off the breather are missing although the diaphram seems to be complete. Idling and low revs...

This may be due to the breather system being restricted. Have the system checked by a specialist as some systems are hard to diagnose.

It could be the engine is worn. If too much combustion pressure gets by the piston rings this will cause pressure to eject engine oil.

If the breather is fine then an engine leak down test is called for. This involves pressurising each cylinder and measuring how much air escapes. This involves using a Leak Down tool...consists of two pressure gauges and an air line and someone who knows how to use one.

A compression test will not tell you how worn your engine is. Compressions of 140 to 160 psi are possible even on a worn motor.

Leak Down readings should be below 12%...ideal would be 2% to 6%.... if higher than 20% it means you don't have an engine in there !

Breather from transfer case to bell housing ? may be blocked or water as under water in flood while hot . oil leak from front drive shaft seal . have new seal ?? wondering if raising breather to...

You can remove the breather tube from the transfer case (twist and pull) and blow compressed air through it. If it has a blockage that could be the cause of your seal to leak (if it is the one on the transfer case not the pinion). The breather tube plugs into the transfer case on the one end and should be open on the other, it just runs up the transmission it doesn't actually plug into it. You shouldn't have to worry about raising it any farther up unless you plan on having it flooded again(not trying to be funny sorry). Good luck, if you have more questions feel free to ask

Oil leaking from above engine. what could it be?

someone installed an aftermarket oil cooler on the bottom of the hood and it has sprung a leak. that is the only way i could see that oil would be coming from above the engine. of course you could have oil leaking from old valve cover gaskets on the top of the block. you could also have a crankcase pressure problem and oil is accumulating in the air cleaner via the breather tube on the top of the engine.

Oil leak front seal

For the seal to leak it must be either worn out..come out.. or the engine compression is so great that is the first place it comes from as the breather pipe could be bunged up and this will alow the gaskets to leak also ,so check out the breather first and compression {or lack of}
