I need to find out the year model of a 9600 and 9650 combine. Which number of the VIN indicates the year model. I need this information for insurance purposes. HO9600X645553 HO9650W695460

For automotive applications, the tenth digit is the code for year of manufacture, but automotive VINs are 17 characters in length. At the link, it states that 13 character VINs for John Deere are not coded for year of manufacture. You may have to check with your John Deere dealer for help.

I just replaced a clutch in a Johndeere 4230 and it hard to shift it into gear. I was wondering if there were some way to adjust the clutch or do you have a solution. Thanks

Hi Tim:
Sounds like a fun project.
I'd double check:
- the position of the forks in the throwout bearing,
- confirm that the throwout bearing is installed facing the right way,
- confirm that the clutch plate is facing the right way
- check the pivot on the throwout lever, and
- check the clutch pedal linkages.
- Finally, (or first if all the preceding is too basic, Check the adjustment in the linkage to achieve about 1 inch free pedal travel.
My apologies for including what may seem exceedingly obvious items.
Here is a link to a bunch of youtube video clips that may assist you.

Clutch plate location

Hi Timothy, The clutch plate is fitted between the gearbox and the engine. Adjustment is carried out by lengthening or shortening the push rod. Some manufactures have adjustments between the slave cylinder and the clutch folk (underneath the vehicle) while others have adjustments between the top of the clutch pedal and the master cylinder, and others require replacement of the rod with shorter or longer, depending if the clutch is engaging to low or too high. If the clutch is slipping it will probably be too late for adjustment and require replacement of the clutch plate and possibly the clutch cover (pressure plate) and maybe the thrust bearing, Regards John
