Question about 1995 Toyota Tacoma

Is it bad to replace the cam and crank seals, while doing the timing belt, without removing the shafts i.e. cutting and prying them out)?

While doing a timing belt replacement i wanted to replace the front seals for the cam and crank shafts. I read a forum that stated it being a bad idea to cut and pry theses seals out as ddescribed in the Hayne repair manual. Do i really need to remove the whole shaft to do this 'correctly'?

Haynes manuals get their information from factory service manuals, so I believe you could do as described in the Haynes book. Just be careful not to scratch up the seal surface on the shafts.

The timing belt runs from the crankshaft pulley up to the head, around the cam gears, back down, over the water pump and back to the crankshaft. Timing belt replacement is a job that is time consuming, and, at times, difficult. If you do not have the proceedure, I can send it to you, but, this is a very specific job, and having the belt incorrect in any one of 6 possible "mistake" positions will result in a no-start or run poor condition. Timing belt replacement for that vehicle is recommended at 90,000 miles.

You need to walk the pulley off.You will need three long bolts that match the thread in the balancer.Undo the centre bolt about half way and bolt the puller to the pulley.the centr bolt is used so the puller has something to push on in the centre Once you have wound the puller up and pulls the balancer until its stopped by the centre bolt.Undo the puller so you can unwind the centre bolt some more and repeat until the balancer falls off.Every thing must be evenly bolted,puller must be mounted squarely or you will have real trouble removing it.Unless the seal can be removed and replaced from the outside of the timing cover you should not need to replace anything else.Did you check the oil pressure switch as the amount of oil your talking about doesnt usualy leak that badly from a balancer seal

i would first check the timing and if that does not fit i would take the cover back off and look at the belt for a bad or missing tooth

Replacing the cam seal. You had to pull the timing belt. Because you had to remove the cam gear. This is where the problem is. Reset the timing and follow the manual to exact procedures. I recommend you replace all the timing components. Also, when you set the timing belt tensioner, Pry on it to get maximum tension. Before you put it together, turn the crank shaft two full turns (by hand/wrench/socket. Make sure it is on the marks. then reassemble.

Replacing a daihatsu terios timing belt


the procedure of aligning all the timing marks before removing the belt will be the same . The necessity of not moving crank and cams without the belt being connected is still relevant. How ever there are some differences as to tensioning the belt and timing balance shafts . The biggest killer of rubber belts is oil so the oil seals (Cams shaft/ crank shaft should be also replaced and hydraulic tensioner if you have one). Idler pulleys do as much work as the belt so replacing them to replace the bearings is also a good move. . To come up to speed as to the differences a workshop manual for your vehicle is strongly recommended.

Why would you remove the crankshaft to replace the valve seals???? Do you mean camshaft? If so then yes it will need to be reset to the correct valve timing if the engine is an OHC with a belt driven cam or cams.

1988-1993 ford festiva leaking oil around the crank pulley... could the oil be coming out of timing chain seal... are could it be a the seal on the crank shaft.. if so would i need to removle the engine to...


This sounds like the crank seal, the engine doesnt have to be removed, in order to get to seal is like replacing the ttiming belt, and once in the timing belt i would replace the crank and cam seals, also do the timing belt, and maybe the waterpump, you will need to remove the crank pulley and then the timing covers then align timing marks for timing belt before ou remove it, with timing belt off the crank pulley then slides off the crankshaft and the seal is behind it, the cam shaft gear unbolts and the seal is behind the gear, once the gears are off then you will be able to remove the seals from the engine,heres a few diagrams to help. good luck and i hope this is helpful,60d826b.gifca916fa.gifcb2cb5a.gif

How to replace a broken timing belt


Daewoo has interference engines in them, so if the timing belt broke while the engine was running, you will need to replace half of the valves which were bent when the pistons crashed into them when the cams stopped turning and the crank shaft continued to turn. Minimum of $700-1000.00 (usually more). If you do it all yourself and the valve guides are not damaged, still at least $400.00 worth of parts to fix. Pull plastic air dams around bottom of engine on front and right side . Support engine with jack. Drain antifreeze from engine and radiator. remove air filter housing and serpentine belt. remove front engine mount. remove cam belt cover. remove broken cam belt and check cam tensioner bearings and idler bearing as well. They are usually bad. Then remove spark plug cover. Remove valve cover. Remove intake from head. remove coil from head. remove heat shield from exhaust manifold then remove manifold from exhaust and from head. remove water hoses and connecting assemblies from side of head and rear of head. remove Cam shaft bearing caps loosening them all evenly so as not to bend cams. remove cams. remove head bolts. remove head. remove valve hydraulic lifters, compress valve springs and remove valve retainers and dissassemble valves. Clean everything very well. Make sure head is not damaged. Remove valve guide seals. install new valve guide seals, new valves. Seat valves with valve grinding compound. clean well. instal valves in reverse order of dissasembly. Before putting head on, make sure number 1 cylinder is at top dead center position. install head using proper torque of 18 ft # in a spiral application rotation from the center outward in a clockwise direction. Then do spiral rotation again tightening bolts each one-quarter turn. Repeat the tightening process two more times only turning the bolts one-quarter turn each time. Use new head bolts. They are designed to stretch in the process of installation and are not to be re-used. Align cams to proper orientation then bolt into place. do not overtorque cam bearing cap bolts. Less than 5 ft # of torque can stretch these bolts. Snug them then tighten them 90 degrees. Then tighten them another 90 degrees (quarter turn). Snug them all then go back and tighten all of them a quater turn, then go back and tighten all of them another quarter turn. Install the cam idler and tensioner and install the cam belt. then install the intake, exhaust and all other items in reverse order of assembly. Do not turn engine over unless you are sure you have the cam belt on with the crank shaft pulley aligned at top dead center and the intake and exhauste pulley marks aligned to their proper marks with the cam belt properly tensioned. You can't be even one tooth off. This must be right before you turn the engine over! Remove spark plugs and turn engine over by hand two rotation clockwise using a wrench on the center bolt of the crank shaft pulley. Check that the timing of cams is still perfect. If not, correct, retension cam belt, double check timing positions again then rotate engine two revolutions. Check cam timing positions again. The timing should not change! The engine should turn over relatively easily. If it feels like it doesn't want to turn, don't force it. You may have the timing off and be pressing a piston against a valve. If you are at this point, then you need to remove cam belt and unbolt cam shafts to release all tension on any of the valves. return the number one cylinder to top dead center position and then reinstall the cams and cam belt. Once it is assembled and in time, then reattatch the rest of the components that were removed in dissassembly. Do this in reverse order of dissassembly. then connect battery and fill radiator fluid. Start car.

1995 toyota camry leaking oil from behind the timing belt cover. Isn't this a major repair? Is the leak more than likely a camshaft seal?


If you haven't had the timing belt replace (60,000 miles is the suggested service intervale) this is an overlap of having the timing belt replaced.
If the timing belt is not due for replacement and its the cam shaft seal that is leaking. Its a pretty easy fix. Remove the top timing belt cover , and the crankshaft sensor wiring you may have to remove the front engine mount . Set #1 piston at TDC, Loosen tensioner w/ spring slip off belt. **Remove sprocket pull out old seal with a sharp pick. Greese and install new seal make sure its flush with its bore . Reistall sprocket. Slide belt over Cam sprocket tighten tensioner. Install cover and mount (if applicable) Check timing marks by turning crank two revolutions.
** If CamSprocket Bolt is difficult to remove then remove valve cover and use a 21mm wrench to hold the Camshaft while you crack off Cam Sprocket Bolt.
You will see the groves on the Camshaft where you can place a wrench to hold the shaft.
After you replaced the seal replace the valve cover gasket ONLY IF YOU HAD TO REMOVE THE COVER TO HOLD THE CAM WHILE REMOVING ITS BOLT.

This is about as major as it gets.

How to replace timing belt 1995 vw golf


  1. remove air intake pipe, and box (upper and lower section)
  2. take off timing belt cover
  3. take off serpintine belt, and v belt
  4. rotate engine to TDC marks line up on crank and cam. camshaft says O^T on it and on the cover behind gear, crank has a notch in the pulley and a arrow on the cover to line up
  5. remove crank pulley 6mm allens not the 19mm 12 bolt
  6. make sure timing belt is still at TDC remove lower timing belt cover there is 3 bolts and a nut holding it on the nut is by the water pump and the bolts are on on top and 2 behind the crank pulley
  7. remove cover
  8. mark intermediate shaft shaft right above the crank pulley
  9. remove belt
  10. install reverse of removal make sure to line up all 3 pulleys cam crank and intermediate shaft or it wont run and depending on how bad it is out of time if you do it wrong you could bend valves

The answer is no. But if your that far into surgery why don't you replace water pump, timing chain,and cam shaft seal. Otherwise , this could be double the work at a later time when they go.

At what mileage do you replace your timing belt on a 2007 Toyota Camry? When you replace this do you replace anything else at the same time to prevent fixing it more than once?


Replacement is at 60k.
Replace the following items:
Water pump, thermostat and gasket, all radiator and heater hoses,camshaft seal, crankshaft seal, oil pump sprocket seal( Right under sprocket) timing belt, two tensioners, spring(optional check its length) and valve cover gasket.
Depending on last tune up good time for wires and plugs and fuel filter.
getting TDC is easy on this bird . Hint: once you gotTDC off crank and Cam (little check hole on Cam sprocket must line up with indentation on face of Cam seal holder) Paint it white for easy installiation later.
Hint: remove harmonic balancer with a steering wheel puller use same puller for crank shaft sprocket.
Puller has two bolts that screw into both items and one center screw in type anvil . Don't even attempt to remove these with a rubber mallet or pry bar. These pulleys sit on two seperate woodruff keys.You'll be there forever. Don't forget to remove the front engine mount and place a block of wood on jack TOO LIGHTLY LIFT WEIGHT OF ENGONE OFF OF BOLTS SO YOU CAN UNSCREW THEM. Two pumps of the jack should do it.Double check all new items with old ones MAKE SURE THEY ARE IDENTICAL ESPECIALLY TENSIONERS.
PRIOR TO REMOVING TIMING BELT COVERS REMOVE CRANK SHAFT SENSOR WIRING.

Oil leak on the rotor timing out put shaft


If you mean the camshaft seal, yes, you would need to pull the timing belt and sprocket off, and if you are anywhere near the service interval for the belt, replace it and the water pump (unless the water pump is very easy to service, and the tensioner.  
You will probably need a (gear/sprocket) puller to get the sprocket off and a another type of (seal) puller to get the seal out.  You could probably extract the old seal with a screwdriver, but it's not recommended.  Get a Haynes manual (around $20) before you even contemplate doing this youself. If you haven't done this before, are mechanically inclined. and have all the tools, you will spend about 1/2 a day to do either the cam seal by itself, or the seal, timing belt, tensioner and water pump.  Once you have it all apart, the last three components will only add an hour to the job, and you won't be stranded when the timing belt breaks.
