Code 51 is for a problem with the heater circuit for the O2 sensor bank two sensor one. That is the sensor on the side with cylinder two.
The sensor and the heater circuit would need to be checked.

I had the same problem and found out I was sold the wrong sensor, my 4.0 has four, they are all different, when you install a new sensor, you must make sure you clear the trouble code before you start the engine, ignition on engine off, that should do it, it worked for me, also if you have your own scanner and can erase the codes yourself, the wrong 02 sensor will turn engine light on with cold start, then after I erased the code it would stay off all day until the next cold start, thats when I found out my new 02 sensor was for bank 1 sensor 2, and not bank 2 sensor 1, hope this helps

Bank 2 is passenger side, sensor 1 is the one up closest to the exhaust manifold. Plug in type (just remove old and plug back into the wiring harness connector) is about $90 at Autozone. You can get a cheaper one that you splice but it's confusing to understand which wires to splice together. Don't forget to buy the special socket, $10, to remove and install the sensor. It's split up the side for the wires. Forget trying to use an open end wrench, socket is best.

It depends on if you are talking about the sensor for the engine computer or the sensors for the fans. (there are three in all if you have a V-6 Engine.) The "how-to" is very simple: Unplug the electrical connector on the sensor, unscrew and remove the sensor. Reverse steps to install.
Where these sensors are located depends on which engine your car is equipped with.

How to reset check engine light?


First replace the bank 2 sensor 1 O2 sensor. p0051 is that sensor heater circuit. These codes are always the O2 sensor, unless you see the wires are melted against the exhaust manifold. Once replaced the light will eventually go out. A code reader or scanner will turn it off.

A P0051 DTC (diagnostic trouble code) refers to the O2 sensor (oxygen sensor) located on Bank 2 in front of the catalytic converter. There is also an oxygen sensor behind the converter which is Sensor #2. This O2 sensor #1 may also be refered to as an air/fuel ratio sensor since on some vehicles it is. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air and then vehicle's computer adjusts the air/fuel ratio going into the engine. The sensor is less effective when the exhaust gas temperature is low, so it includes a heater which is activated to help get better readings from the A/F O2 sensor. Basically this means that the the car's computer has detected that not all of the engine's cylinders are firing properly. A P0300 diagnostic code indicates a random or multiple misfire. If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, for example, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring. Unfortunately, a P0300 doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) is/are mis-firing, nor why. Symptoms Symptoms may include: the engine may be harder to start the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate other symptoms may also be present Causes A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: Faulty spark plugs or wires Faulty coil (pack) Faulty oxygen sensor(s) Faulty fuel injector(s) Burned exhaust valve Faulty catalytic converter(s) Stuck/blocked/leaking EGR valve / passages Faulty camshaft position sensor Defective computer Possible Solutions If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open. It is helpful to have access to a factory service manual and an advanced scan tool to properly diagnose a random misfire DTC. This is a generic OBD2 code for a defective O2 Sensor, your car will most likely have 2 sensors, one narrow band (cheaper one) and one wide bans (dearer one).
It's usually the wide band sensor that fails and can be found just past the catalytic converter.

A P0051 DTC (diagnostic trouble code) refers to the O2 sensor (oxygen sensor) located on Bank 2 in front of the catalytic converter. There is also an oxygen sensor behind the converter which is Sensor #2.

This O2 sensor #1 may also be refered to as an air/fuel ratio sensor since on some vehicles it is. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air and then vehicle's computer adjusts the air/fuel ratio going into the engine. The sensor is less effective when the exhaust gas temperature is low, so it includes a heater which is activated to help get better readings from the A/F O2 sensor. Essentially this P0051 code means that the resistance of the heater circuit is lower than normal. In most cases, that resistance level must fall below 0.8 A to trigger the DTC code.

Potential Symptoms Most likely you'll not notice any symptoms other than the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp, a.k.a. the check engine light) will illuminate.
Causes A P0051 DTC trouble code may be caused by one or more of the following:

  • A failed O2 sensor heater

You will need wiring diagrams, to find components
and diagnose the problem

You have 2 O2 Sensor Codes-- for Heater issues

I would look for an O2 Relay, for the heaters, once
you have a diagram to work with

Battery voltage will be to the heaters only

Don't put your meter on the black sensor
wire, you may ruin the sensor, by loading the circuit

Just work the 2 white heater wires on chassis
side, for the 12 v

Unplug the O2 Sensors, and probe the harness heater
wires only, until you get your 12v back

I have a 04 sequoia and the codes p0031 and p0051 are coming up. How do I fix this?


Trouble code P0031 means: Oxygen Sensor Heater Control Circuit Low - Bank 1 Sensor 1 .
Error code p0051:replace O2 sensor ($75-150 depending if OEM) before catalytic converter. need O2 socket ($10) to get at and tough to get to if vehicle isn't at least on a ramp.
