You may have cooked the engine.
It sounds like the head gasket may have blown, and you could be leaking coolant into the cylinders.

SOURCE: 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee - engine stops while driving

it could be a fuel problem or electrical problem also check the catalytic converter to make sure their is no clog.your mech needs to check fuel pressure to make sure the pump and filter is not bad.Being that you said it does it in the rain makes me think its more a ingition problem ,id first check the cap /plugs /wires/ rotor/battery conections/ alt/ starter and grounds

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

IT IS THE WATER-PUMP. PLEASE DON'T WAIT FOR IT TO OVER-HEAT BECAUSE THEN IT WILL BE TOO LATE, AND VERY COSTLY. PRICE A HEAD-GASKET JOB AND COMPARE IT TO THE COST OF A WATER PUMP. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE. BEST OF LUCK.

SOURCE: jeep 2002 grand cherokee dies unless i keep foot on the gas...

The idle relearn needs reset. Keep your foot on the gas at about 900 rpm. Make it idle for about 5-6 minutes. Slowly ease up on the gas until it will idle on it's own, it might take a while. After you get it to idle, it might be idling real low, but on its own, Let it sit and idle until for 20 minutes. After that it should be back to normal. You will have to do this every time you have the battery unhooked for a while.

1992 Jeep Cheroke Limited overheating my upper radiator hose burst yesterday morning. replaced the hose added coolant still overheating. removed the thermostat started it and it is still overheating and...

replace the cap , its allowing the system to over pressurize, also, you could have an air bubble thats moving around in the system, always make sure that you fill the radiator to just cover the radiator fins inside, this allows a place for expansion to happen. what you need to do is BURP your system, leave the cap off and start the vehicle, ( before doing this step,, make sure that you've replaced the thermostat, spring towards the motor , it only works one way!! ) once you see the fluid inside the radiator moving, it means the thermostat has opened, and your fluid level should drop down, slowly add more until the fins are just covered, and wait for it to close and recycle one more time, refill again, that should purge the system of unwanted air,, replace the cap, and fill the over flow tank to the lower level line,, and you should be set

1993 jeep grand cheroke leaks coolant when i shut it off

The reason for that may be that when its running it holds enough pressure to withold the leak momentarily. The main places where it could be leaking from is upper or lower radiator hoses, water pump, radiator, resevior tank or through you'r head gaskets. If you have the time, take it to a mechanic and have him pressure test it to see where the leak is coming from exatcly. Runing the engine with a leak, increases the chance of it overheating, which could cause internal engine damage.

Hope this Helps!

Most teermostat are intalled at the upper portion of the cylinder head, (dischared side) just trace where the upper radiator hose is attached at the cylinder head side. there you can find the thermostat. Can you do it by yourself.

follow top radiator hose from radiator to engine wear hose ends, it will be clamped to whats called the gooseneck, thermostat is under that. you will have to drain coolant, not all, maybe 1 half gal. before you remove it. 2 bolts new gasget new thermostat, just remember spring on new thermostat goes in engine.
