Sounds like a simple fuse problem. Try checking and replacing fuses inside the truck and under the hood as well. check them ALL, as some fuses say they control one thing, but end up controlling more than a few :)

Depends on cylinders 4 use black or 6 use gray wire

On the 4-Cylinder engine, the BLACK wire is in a GRAY CONNECTOR located on the COIL, drivers side of the engine.

On the V-6 engine, use the GRAY wire, located at the IGNITOR, located just in FRONT of the STRUT TOWER.

Speedometer works but not the rpm gauge 98 Tahoe 5.7

The speedometer is operated differently then the tachometer. Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM). Voltage pulses are taken from the ignition control module (ICM) (Gasoline) or the generator (Diesel) and sent to the tachometer. Solid state circuits convert the pulse frequency in order to move the pointer of the tachometer.

Tachometer Inoperative (Gas)
Did you perform the OBD II System Check been performed?
Go to Step 2
Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check (5.0L/5.7L); Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check (7.4L)
Remove the I/P Cluster.
Disconnect the Ignition Coil connector.
Connect a J 39200 DMM (continuity) between I/P Cluster connector cavity 6 and ground.
Is continuity present?
Go to Step 3
Go to Step 4
Locate and repair the short to ground in CKT 121 (WHT) between the Ignition Coil and the I/P cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Is the repair complete?
Refer to Instrument Cluster System Check
Connect a J 39200 DMM (continuity) from I/P Cluster cavity 6 to ignition coil connector cavity B.
Is continuity present?
Go to Step 5
Go to Step 6
Replace the I/P Cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
Is the repair complete?
Refer to Instrument Cluster System Check
Locate and repair the open in CKT 121 (WHT) between the Ignition Coil and the I/P Cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Is the repair complete?
Refer to Instrument Cluster System Check

You Have To Start Again There Is Something Not Connected ,
You Left A Wire Or Plug Out ,A Small Earth Wire Might Be Screwed On That Got Pulled Off.

you may have a bad instrument cluster and on yours the BCM run the cluster not the PCM

You shorted out the wireing harness, going to the guages, Possiblly evan a fusible link was mess up.

check for a blown fuse in the fuse panel and if its not that pull the gauge cluster out of the dash and check the power and ground going to it cause most of the time its a bad ground wire or power wire cause people tend to kick wires under the dash on accident or they get worn or come apart

see if wiring has corroded(injection pump}, check the sensor, add grounding wire. if not replace tachometer with same working voltage

I went through 3 speedometer/tachometer/gas/temperature gauges with each one lasting about 2-300 miles on my 1995 buick riviera. i'll be driving around 65-70 and the needles will flutter and quit working....

It sounds like you are getting voltage spikes in the wiring leading up to the instrument cluster. check the wiring bundle for the cluster and make sure there is not a wire that is exposed and possibly grounding out. also check the alternator output for voltage irregularities via a volt meter or take it to an auto parts store or shop to have it checked. that could be the culprit.

Speedometer and odometer not working. tachometer and all other instrument panel gages are OK.

replace instrument closter, one from a salvage unit in good condition can work and is cheaper if cost is a factor
