If you mean the front hub and axle, it would probably be a 32 or 34 mm.

Change front differential seal


I take it that it is a pinion seal

remove the tail shaft

undo the pinion nut

( use an 1/2 " impact gun )

pull the yoke off

use a lever and pry out the old seal

fit new seal flush with the diff body face

refit the yoke and do the nut up till it is hard on the yoke plus about 1/8 of a turn or if there is a split pin to position the nut to the closest slot that the pin will fit in

( there are two types of spacers in diffs

one is solid and you can do the nut up to the desired tension

the other is a collapsible spacer which would have been collapsed to the correct dimension in initial assembly so the nut cannot be done up any tighter that what I suggest or you will over load the pinion bearings and burn them out

refit the tail shaft

Gear oil leaking from rear of drive shaft


You need to replace the seal for the pinion. ou need to remove the drive shaft off the pinion yoke thene you will find a big nut in the center of the yoke that has to be removed but before you remove the nut check to see if there is any kind of play on the yoke if there is play the pinion bearing will have to be replaced if that is the case your better off having a mechanic do the job. If there is no play remove the nut pull the yoke off replace the seal and reinstall in reverse order.

Need to replace U-joints on an 89 F350 . How do I remove them? V8(460 CID) 4x4 crewcab longbox gas.


put a little heat to them and use a small scoket that fits in side the u-joint and then make sure you got a broad under it
then smake with a hammer till it comes out,
o make sure the broad is under the yoke well behind the yoke on the ground it will have to be removed from the truck to do this
then you put the new in by taping it in with caps on both sides or to make it easy use a big C-clamp to press then in the old holes you took the old one out

Changing rear axle seal on 78 ford f150. looking for diagram.


You probably have the 9 inch differential. If it is a rear wheel seal remove the tire and wheel assembly. Be sure to use a jack stand so you don't have the vehicle fall on you. Remove the 4 retaining bolts that hold the backing plate onto the housing. Pull the axle from the axle tube. It may be stubborn at removal. If it is the pinion seal remove the drive line. Remove the pinion nut that rests inside the yoke. Try to use an impact tool for easy removal. Once the nut is off the yoke willcome off. You may need a puller to help in removal. One the yoke is off remove the pinion shaft seal. Replace with a new seal. install the yoke and the washer and then the pinion nut. Re-torque the pinion nut to 150 foot pounds.

How to install yoke on the rear diff on a ford f350


remove driveshaft from yoke by removing bolts and possition to side. Measure the preload on the on the pinion nut if you don't have the tool to do this mark the nut and make mark on yoke to later align nut when reinstalling. remove nut. some times a slide hammer is required to pull yoke out. At thi time pinion seal should also be replaced. istallation is the reverse tap yoke in install nut and align marks previously made then reinstall everything else

  1. Install an Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench on the nut and record the torque necessary to maintain rotation of the drive pinion gear through several revolutions.
  1. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: After removing the nut, discard it. Use a new nut for installation. Use the special tool to hold the pinion flange while removing the nut.
  1. Index-mark the pinion flange and drive pinion gear stem to maintain initial balance during installation.
  1. Using the special tool, remove the pinion flange.
Installation
  1. Inspect the pinion flange seal journal for rust, nicks, and scratches prior to installing the flange. Polish the seal journal with fine crocus cloth, if necessary.
  1. Lubricate the pinion flange splines.
    • Use SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A.
  1. NOTE: Disregard the index marks if installing a new pinion flange. Position the pinion flange.
  1. Using the special tools, install the pinion flange.
  1. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Do not under any circumstance loosen the nut to reduce preload. If it is necessary to reduce preload, install a new collapsible spacer (4662) and nut. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Remove the special tool while taking preload readings with the Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench. Tighten the nut to set the preload.
    • Rotate the drive pinion occasionally to make sure the differential pinion bearings (4630) (4621) seat correctly. Take frequent differential pinion bearing torque preload readings by rotating the drive pinion with a Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench.
    • If the preload recorded prior to disassembly is lower than the specification for used bearings, then tighten the nut to specification. If the preload recorded prior to disassembly is higher than the specification for used bearings, then tighten the nut to the original reading as recorded.
    • Refer to the torque specification for used differential pinion bearings in the Specifications portion of this section.

Yes, but you will need to mark the yoke position and exact number of turns to remove the nut or you will change ring and pinion gear lash setting when re-installing it. You can use a large pipe wrench to hold the yoke still while tightening, or get a special tool made for that.

I have a rear end seal that need replacing the one behine the drive shaft in a 1997 chev 1500 pickup truck.


It isn't a bad job but to it you'll need an inch pound torque-o-meter and maybe a 2point puller and a seal removal and installer tool. Remove the driveshaft from the rear yoke, remove the lock-nut from the yoke, remove the yoke, remove the seal. install the new seal*must be installed evenly*. install the yoke and put the lock-nut back on !don't over tighten the lock-nut! With the brakes released (no resistence) and the tires removed. you are looking for no side to side play in bearing but also you are setting inch pounds as well. there should only be 5 inch pounds of resistence on the bearings.(this doesn't mean that you set the lock nut to inch pound, it will take maybe over 100 ft. lbs. to tighten the nut)
