On most any car, a faulty lifter should be noisy and it would cause a valve not to open, which would kill that cylinder.

the ticking noise usually points to a lifter or lifters sticking, they bleed down when sitting for a while.
some times an oil flush might do the trick , or change the lifters?

Both the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder, and the 2.5 liter V6 are overhead cam engines. While all years of the V6 us hydraulic tappets, the 4-cylinder engines varied. From 1998 and earlier, they had hydraulic tappets. From 1999 on, they used shimmed mechanical tappets. Adjusting valve clearance on the later engines is a little involved, and, if you're not familiar with the procedure, it is perhaps best left to a professional mechanic who is familiar with the engine.

you could have carbon build up on the back of the valves that is bad enough that it could cause a noise like pre-ignition and if its bad enough it could cause a usually will cause the engine to sometimes run bad or have hard starting when the engine is cold as the carbon soaks up the gas until it can`t assorb any more.this can be possibly repaired by having a fuel system service that runs a chemical through the motor by use of a could also be bad valve guides or valve springs allowing the valve to not move up and down straight but on an angle.kind of like holding a pencil in your hand with some resitance and moving it up and down and then lossening your grip on the pencil and doing the same thing it won`t try to travel straight.

You should have hydraulic lifters, unless someone changed them along the way. Normally nobody puts solid lifters in a vehicle that is a driven on the street daily. That being said, the normal adjustment for hydraulic lifters is normally take all clearance out of rocker arm to lifter plus an extra 1/2 to 3/4 turn. I used to do this with the motor running, I would adjust it tighter till it quits rattling and then tighten an extra 1/2 turn. If the lifters are bad, however, the rattling will never go away. I hope this helps.

The lifters make a rattling noise after start up, it gets quiet after driven a bit, how do you replace these?

when was your last oil change ? your oil could be dirty and basically used up,, change the oil and filter first ,, see if that doesn't help with the noisy lifters, I suggest having the rockers adjusted if the problem persists , this is a much cheaper fix, and its normally the rocker arm adjustment thats slowly gone bad, but to answer your question, you would have to remove the intake manifold to get to the lifters depending on which motor your vehicle has ,,

I have a 1997 Ford E-250 van with the 5.4L Triton V-8 which has had the oil changed every 3000 miles for all of its 230,000 miles and no problems until the other morning when I started it up and it...

Is the loud tapping causing a bad miss? 5.4 Tritons are known for 'throwing plugs because they very narrow threads for the plugs. Just to be safe, check to see if all plugs on that side are tight-you might have a loose one, and catching it before it's tossed (which will result in destroyed threads) will save you a lot of trouble. Timesert kits are available if it gets that far, and since you always took care of it with timely oil changes I'd check this out first-here is a link for the kit in case you need it:

Sounds like a small tapping in the motor but no loss of power, and shifting smooth still. What is that tap?

Could bad a lifter gone bad or dirty, start with the simple and add a bottle of to your engine oil. This free up and lifters that may have dirt in it, it the noise is still there. The most likely your going to have to have your rocker arms or lifters replaced.

i have the same sound but I've been told that its a gasket leak from either in front or behind the exhaust manifold
