Have transmission shop check it out.make sure transmission fluid level correct.and filter been changed.but let transmission shop code scan for faulty shift solnoid second third gear.or check for faulty PCM or TCM could be problems in the governor pressure solenoid.need scanner to trouble shoot.

It sounds like the last gear in your transmission may not be engaging. Caravans are actually famous for tranny problems. Furthermore, be sure to check your transmission fluid while your vehicle is idling. That ensures accuracy. But you may have to get someone to physically look at it to ensure your problem gets solved. Kind of risky diagnosing something so big through typing.

Sounds like your trans is stuck in limp in mode. Could be something simple as a sensor, or something major as the trans or the computer. Will need to be computer diagnosed.

SOURCE: Won't shift from 2nd gear to drive unless i run

This trans has a safety built in to default to second gear if the computer sees any kind of problem. Have it scanned. It can be an input or out put speed sensor, or even a temp sensor on the engine. If there are codes that say ratio error, take it back to who rebuilt it and hope they will take care of you. I use to give a major discount if they were not too far out of warranty.

Testimonial: "the information i recieved was what i was thinking it might be,either a speed sensor or a related computer problem Thanks for your input."

If it ran out of gas you may have sediment in the fuel lines causing rough running which may trigger a transmission code due to improper vacuum due to the rough running.

My 2001 Dodge Caravan's transmission is stuck in reverse.

Things haven't changed much...look on top of the transmission in the engine compartment and look at the shifting linkage. Look for anything that could be interfering with the shifting. One linkage is the cable to the Shift Lever and Rod that goes down into the transmission. Remove the cable adjustment screw.
Move the shift lever rod towards the front of the Van into the Park Indent Position. Place the Driver's Position (Dash) Shift Lever into Park and then reconnect the Cable to the Shift Lever and tighten down the cable adjustment screw to 70 in-lbs.
Check operation's
