My steering wheel is very loose, wobbles on my 95 Ford Ranger. Does the steering column have to be replaced, or just the bushings?

In the past with different makes and models, I've went to the salvage yard and found a steering column that was in good shape and swapped out the steering column.

I'm not saying that is the best way to do it? If you can get the parts and want to replace the guts in your steering column, go for it.

I just wanted to add, I thought replacing the steering column was the fastest fix. The fastest way isn't always the best.

Ignition switch removal/replacement for 1995 vw passat

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel, and then remove the steering column covers. Remove the turn signal and wiper switches. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring. Remove the clamping washer, spring and contact ring from the steering column, and then remove the lock housing up off the column tube and steering column. Remove the ignition switch mounting fastener and remove the switch. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following: Press the contact ring, spring and clamping washer onto the steering column using a properly sized and sturdy metal pipe or tube. If after installation of the clamping washer, the steering column is not projecting out far enough, pull the steering column out further.

How to tighten 1989 steering column?

There is a u-joint inside the steering column if you have tilt wheel. Which I don't think that I have ever seen a steering column get loose if there is not tilt wheel. If there is not tilt wheel then there are two bolts that hold the steering column up against the bottom side of the dash. You will just need to tighten these two bolts. If you do have tilt wheel, then it is going to require taking the steering column out and replacing the u-joint in the steering column.

Ok,if you pull the cover off the steering column, you will see the electrical part of the ignition,it is the part the key cylinder is inserted in and the wires run down to a connector about halfway down the steering column.Just replace that piece and all should be fine.
