If you want to, you can change just that piston...or more likely that one set of rings (but will need to buy a set) It's not a routine repair but it can be done.The cylinder head needs to be removed, as does the oil pan. Even with the few special items you will need, the price is far below what the engine replacement will cost. Don't buy anything till its apart so you can have the head checked. I'd also look into a good used engine likely installed it's at least $1000 cheaper than the two prices you listed.
I would only buy one that has similar or less miles that sustained a rear or side impact. If the body is perfect that shows that the car likely had mechanical problems otherwise why scrap it? Is the dealer overpriced???Show me one that's not!!!

Fan problem is the blower resistor module. Very easy to fix ,located right next to the fan under the dash behind the glove box.It has screws that hold it inside the air duct. just remove, unplug from blower motor and replace. A new one costs about 25$.
