Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

1989 Chevy 2500 pickup. Two months ago I was driving and truck just died. After it cooled off it would crank for maybe 5 seconds then would not crank. Replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. Still would not start. Replaced pickup coil. Still nothing. Replaced ECM in distributor. Cranked and run fine for 1 1/2 months. Doing the same thing again. Cranks but will not start. Is it a bad ECM? Please help?

You can have the coil and module tested at most auto parts stores. The module provides the ground signal to the coil. It could also be the pickup coil in the bottom of the distributor.

More than likely it's the distributor. They have a tendency to build up corrosion and rust and have personally went through the same situation three weeks ago on a suburban. Check to see if you are getting spark from the distributor first. Have the ecm in the distributor checked at Oriellys for free. It's under the rotor and has two 8mm head bolts with wires plugged in at each end.

85 chevy 2500 5.7L fuel gauge stopped working and truck died. Fuel pump was replaced 3 months ago

Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good. Have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. Does distributor turn when you crank it? If spark everywhere, check fuel. If you have a carb, mechanical fuel pump, sometimes you can take fuel supply line loose from carb, aim into container, bump the engine, see if gas comes out, if no gas have to back track. If there is gas, take the air horn off carb, depending on the carb, you may be able to remove air horn w/o removing carb, see if any gas in float bowl, if no gas, maybe you need a carb kit?
Any vehicle needs fuel--spark--compression, right amount at the right time.

I have a 1989 Ford f150 drive for about 30 minutes it dies out or stop and want crank for about an hour

I would unplug the gas cap when it stalls; if you hear a hissing sound, change the gas cap, because it builds up a vacuum in the tank.

2007 chevy 2500 died while driving down the road. Lights/radio still work

The battery light was on because the engine stopped running. The alternator was not charging the battery.
On a model that new, if the engine did overheat the computer could kill it. A stuck thermostat comes to mind. But your temp gauge should have been on the hot side.
Its also possible something locked up and is preventing the engine from cranking, such as the water pump or alternator. You may need to remove the belt to verify. If the belt is slipping it would not power the water pump to keep the engine cool.

1988 chevy silerado 4x4 2500 350 crank and run for 3 mins. then ideals up high, runs unit i touch the gas, then dies and will not crank until it cools off

Check for a short or broken wire on the pickup coil under the breaker plate where the spark module is mounted. Distributor needs to be removed and torn down to replace if wires are broken What I think you're getting is that when the advance moves, it is breaking the connection in there. (could be wrong but I'm not there) Also check for spark quality and that the egr valve isn't sticking part way open.
Rare but also possible is a worn timing chain.
