Question about Cars & Trucks
If there is a slotted bracket under the alternator then loosen it and push the alternator down ( if it is difficult you may have to loose the mount bolts as well) If there is no slotted bracket the adjustment will be on a idler pulley. Loosen the pulley shaft nut and behind the pulley there will be a long adjusting bolt. You may have to remove other belts to get the belt you want off. It will not be necessary to remove any fans as the belt will come off by placing a section of the belt between the blade and revolving the fan until the belt is on or off

SOURCE: Belt replacements
I've got an '86 Cherokee Laredo 2.6L and a '91 Wrangler too. It's got a 4.0L inline six cylinder. But it has a serpentine belt.
Comment me back and tell me which components will be attached to the belt in question. That way I can tell you which of them gets used to install the belt.
You will need a socket set and a pry bar for the procedure.

i just bought a used 97 CHEROKEE but i had the same problem, when i got to looking at it i found out the front driveshaft was shot, look at that, if its not it i would say its probably the transfer case especially with an older vehicle like that which is a very expenxive repair
