Rear brake diagram

Line is rotted through and leaking, it is the metal tubing section from the distribution block for the right rear wheel.is there a replacement or do you have to make it up/

Depends on your mechanic ablilites. Steel brake line is basically 0.188 inch diameter line, and the metric 6mm line dia is very closely same.
Dodge uses ISO bubble flare , and not the American standard double flare at the end of the steel tube line. This ISO bubble flare on the steel line then fits into its mate female end which is the rubber hose connector end.
So, easiest way to get rid of the ISO bubble flare and change to American double flare end is:
Some automotive stores such as Parts Plus Auto Stores carry the brass brakeline adapter which has one end being the male end that fits nicely into the rubber hose with its ISO bubble female fitting, while the other end of the brass line adapter is the female end which has the double flare so you can then insert the steel line replacement with standard double flare into this end of the adapter.
Steel line , bungy brake line or equivalent is fine, and has the brake line nuts already on it, and is flared for you too. If you want to stay with ISO bubble line fittings you can get that in bungy brake line lengths too but it is less common for some stores to carry, and that is why the conversion brake line fitting adapter mentioned is so easy a way to change from ISO bubble flare to a double flare for easier use of all steel line being standard American double flared brake line. The brake lines come in straight lengths, 2ft 4ft, and 6ft, so you can use them to fit your necessary total length by connecting them with tubing couplers which the steel tube lines brake line nut gets threaded into.
My same year Durango had its rear line blow thru last year, due to the rusting of the steel brake line. I just got done last week, doing a entire steel line replacement myself. It was a medium sized effort for sure. You should check the other lines for the entire brake system to see if you need to replace more than just that section which failed for you, as my lines showed heavy corrosion at many other locations in the brake line system.
It is easy to double flare brake line tubing , and Sears sells its craftsman brand of brake line double flare tool kit for that purpose at about 60 bucks if I recall it right.
One thing you should do when doing your own double flaring, is to use a dial caliper to measure the diameter of the flare at its widest flared end, to insure you are within the required diameter of flare to insure proper sealing when you tighten down the tube flare nuts. I recall the flare diameter is supposed to be 0.272 inches , plus or minus 0.006 inches ( so range of dial caliper measuring of that formed flare should be between 0.266 inch and 0.278 inch) to insure the right diameter of flare for good sealing.
You can also get steel galvanized tubing line in coils of 20ft and more, with a bunch of brake line nuts ( all this is standard american brake line nuts, for double flared line fitting) from Inline Tube company; www.inlinetube.com.

I end to fix it on my way i bough universal brake steel tube and one connector and i disconnect from the rubber flex pipe and cut flash the old pipe one foot from front before fuel tank where old pipe still in good shape i put connector between old pipe and new pipe on back end i put regular universal tube fitting.
works good .

Because of ABS (antilock brakes and traction control) I recommend a professional auto tech be utilized. The system will need to be bled of trapped air after the replacement and with ABS there are speciality tools and equiptment required.
Usually there is a rubber brake line (hose) with threaded fitting that goes to the steel lines. The replacement lines come straight and need to be custom bent in place (without kinking the metal). If the replacement lines are too long, they will need to be cut and new flare ends made (Special flaring tools)

I have just done this job with aftermarket brake lines in three pieces, two 40" and one 30" joined by unions. I did not take the tank down, it is possible to reach the clips holding the brake line from the top reaching in with your fingers from the outside reaching over the frame. Make sure to have good light and a flashlight at hand. Above each clip holding the electric cable run you see next to the tank there is also a slot (in the same clip) for holding the brake line. I used the two long pieces in the rear and slid one in place, then joined it with the second one the short piece I used to do the final bend up to the junction block. The uninon for that one to the other two conveniently ended up right behind the front most clip holding the brake line and the fuel line to the chassis. I am not sure if I saved time or effort doing it this way I just shyed away from bringing down the tank as all I jacked up the car with was drive on ramps and there was not much space under it. Also the brake line did not conveniently burst when I had an almost empty tank to handle but the other way around...

Sounds like you have an air lock in your distribution block or it could be a bad distribution block all together. Sometimes you can tap it lightly and the air lock will bleed out. Also check your vacuum booster. If it is real hard to press the brake petal down, with the motor running, the vacuum booster diaphragm is blown, or there is a vacuum leak in the line to the booster. Pull the vacuum line off the booster with the engine running to see if there is vacuum to the booster, this will likely make the engine stall out if the booster is working properly. A little trick I do when bleeding my brakes is take about 16 inches of clear tubing that fits the bleeder, then get a quart Mason jar stick the tubing that is attached to the bleeder into the jar, then add about and inch of brake fluid to the jar and start pumping the petal. Always keep an eye on the jar and your master cylinder as to not let the master cylinder run out, or the jar to overflow. Hope this helps, good luck. is the metal line or the rubber line leaking? if its the rubber hose just get a new one at the local parts store they are specific to your vehicle.
if its the metal line buy a roll of tubing if you want to replace the whole line dont forget the correct fittings. if you just want to repair a section get a piece of line apx 2 ft longer then the section you want to repair with the correct fittings and that will cover it. Best repair replace the whole line do not patch or will end up repairing it again down the road.

Hello, I can tell you where everything is at. Did all my lines in Feb 2011. The rear lines on a F150 come from each rear wheel and they are rubber until the end of their brackets. Metal lines take over and meet at a vent tube holder on the Drivers side of the axle. An overhead rubber line with a splitter is bolted to a threaded vent tube and each rear wheel line fits in the brass block that is part of the Rubber line.

Each rear wheel line has a different size fitting to avoid mix ups. The brake line is the same diameter throughout. All use inverted flare fittings. It is a pain to get the fittings beforehand as they are mixed sizes.

The rubber line with a splitter meets a metal line topside of the frame around the frame hump for the rear wheels. The line is on rubber hangers as it travels toward the front of the truck and meets a metal union just short of the fuel filter. The metal line goes through the frame and tightly runs past the bottom of the Drivers fender and goes outside the frame until it meets the front wheelwell.

The same line crosses back into the inside of the frame and runs parallel with the frame, past the A arms and then ends up attaching to the ABS unit.

The Dealer probably does not have preformed lines. Every combination of bedsize and cabsize will determine how long some of the brake lines are. (Based on wheelbase.)

You have 2 choices. Get a preformed Stainless kit with front lines too, around $200. Make your own and spend hours assembling, bending, and flaring fittings after buying the line and the fittings.

You can go with cheap lines or use what I did, a copper/nickel mixed metal line that Volvo perfected with an extended salt corrosion resistance. It really is a job you only want to do once.
Gotta hand it to the brake mechanics who do it every day.

Here is a Summary. 2 Rubber hoses from each wheel, 2 metal lines to the threaded brass block on the vent tube. 1 rubber hose with the brass block. Then a long run of brakeline, then a connection around the fuel filter, and another long run of brakeline outside and back inside the frame to the ABS unit.

They don't make diagrams for brake lines. The lines are sold in bulk. You need to measure and duplicate the bends in the orignal lines and cut/flare the lines yourself. You will need a tubing cutter, flare tool and tubing bender.

How to determine if 97 Ram 1500 has 2- or 4- 2wheel brakes? Need info for wheel bearing replacement.


on 1997 dodge ram 1500s you can look at the back of the front brakes and if you do have 4wheel abs you will have a brake line and an electrical line running tto the brake caliper. you can also look at the master cylinder, on the right side of the power brake booster (if youre looking from the front of the truck) there will be a metal brake distribution block if it has 2 lines running out of it you have 2 wheel abs...4 lines means 4 wheel abs

Double-walled steel line is used in the hydraulic lines between the brake master cylinder and the front tube connector, and between the brake master cylinder and the flexible brake hose at the rear wheels.
Double-flared brake lines provide good leak-proof connections.
When replacing hydraulic brake lines, hoses, or connectors, tighten all connections securely. After replacement, bleed the brake system; refer to Section 206-00 .
The wet appearance of the outer cover of the rubber brake hose is referred to as "sweating." This is a normal condition for neoprene rayon braid hose and is not a sign of leakage or cause for replacement of the hose.

What you need to do is jack the car up and get underneath it to pinpoint where the leak is coming from. Please be safe jacking up your car. Put blocks underneath the rear tires if they come off the ground or put blocks between your rear axle and the ground so if the car does come crashing down it will only fall until the axle hits the blocks.

It should be pretty self explanetory what needs to be done once you find the leak.

If you have drum brakes and its leaking on the inside of the drums and running down the bottom of the inside of the tire it means you have a bad wheel cylinder. Wheel cylinders have brake fluid running through them to operate the brake shoes. They do go bad with age.

If its a rotted line you can purchase a lenght of line and some fittings for each end and splice the new line into the old line but this isn't recommended.

There are 2 pieces,but you shouldn't need to replace them both,
You have 2 (metal) on each side of the differential running towards the wheels.one is shorter than the other and meet at a small distribution block
