Chain on my trike making noise in the rear

Miami Sun Adult Tricycle. Have only had it for 3 months. Last night what appears to be the chain started making a noise (rattling?). Night before it was fine. Noise only occurs when the chain is moving.

SOURCE: Engine making noise. Might be from timming chain. Please help?

Sounds like the fan is hitting the cowl. Check the fan for a broken blade or the cowl for any stray pieces that could be hitting the fan. A loose heat shield on the catalytic converter is also a possibility. Heat shields are basically spot welded and most muffler shops won't touch them. Hope this helps to answer your question.

SOURCE: mechanic replaced timing chain but rattling noise

Replacing the timing chain is done around 100,000 miles, but can last as long as 200,000.
Sounds like something may be on its way out, and a rattle does indicate a chain. Not all oil pumps use chains...many use gears to spin the oil.
Most people know when it needs replacement when they are calling for a tow truck.
It could be your water pump as well. It is hard to tell where the sound comes from sometimes. A stethescope may help pin-point the sound to the part.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: Looking for Timing Chain Guide

Check with Auto Zone if no...see the Dealer but also check the camshaft gear sprocket...if its composite you may need to replace it as well...this also causes chains to rattle and jump.

At how many mi do i change cam chain

Les, The chain in the 2.3 is to last as long as the engine, normally if some thing was to happen, chain guides would wear first and you would likely here a rattling noise that would alert you to have things checked. This engine is known as an interference engine, meaning if chain did slip/break, it could cause real damage to engine valve train and pistons. If it would give you piece of mind and you have over 200,000 on it, have i changed. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

The 2.o engines are bad about dropping valve seats but your problem could be a shreading t-belt either way, needs attention. If it starts skipping or running rough shut it down immediately.A valve seat out of place can do a lot of damage.

Make sure the oil level is good. The hydraulic tensioners for the chain work with the engine's oil. If low it will make a rattling/knocking like noise.

Loud chatter on start and rattle from timing chain area

The timing chain area also takes in the alternator and water pump. To isolate the source of the noise, use the old mechanics trick.

Place a 3 foot 1/4 inch brass rod against the flap at the opening of your ear and push until it closes. Place the other end of the rod against various engine components and listen. The noisy problem will conduct the noise up the rod to your ear and you can hear quite precisely where the problem is. Much safer than laying your ear all over a running engine.

You can also loosen the fan belt and run the engine without alternator or water pump (briefly) to see how that affects the problem. Chatter on start makes me think of starter and Bendix gear problems. Sounds like a 2 person diagnostic team to me; one to start the car and one to listen and probe.

Don't know if Subaru Forrester has an engine that has valve interference at piston Top Dead Center. If it is and the timing chain breaks, you are looking at major $$ to recover.

Will a timing chain/belt cause your car to stall out when driving it and not allow it to start up after it stalls?

I had a timing chain problem, It made a noise for about 3 years and it decided to break last May, the engine just totally stopped. My 99 cavalier had 164,000 miles on it. My friend and I found out the the cavalier 2.2 eng. has a non interfer timing chain. so when my timing chain broke it didn't cause any damage.

2000 saturn upper engine knocking

noise is caused by lack of oil to lifters, or worn timeing chain. if noise is from lifters it should go away wit proper oil level, if still there needs timeing chain.
