Usually at idle they wont kick on until car reaches certain temp under stress. change thermostat since its fairly cheap and is a simple fix. number one cause of overheating. but number one effected is head gaskets and that will cost you.

SOURCE: Cooling fans are not coming on so car is overheating. Hot wired fans ato battery and they work. Switched around some of the relays and the fuses are good. Fluids are good also. Light comes on when it

Sounds like the temp sending units might be bad.I'm pretty sure there is one on the bottom or the radiator. there may be 2 on your vehicle. the other would be on the goose neck where your thermostat is.

Overheating when idling

check coolant level and check radiator fan operation when then car is idling in park. if your fans aren't coming on you have a problem with the fan switch or circuit.

Are the fans coming on when they should?
When they come on does it have any effect on the temp.
Pressure test the cooling system to see if it is holding pressure.

Hi i have a 1989 toyota cam my cooling fans are not coming on any more i also had the thermostat change and the coolant drained and replaced what could it be please help. jeanette

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You need to check your fuses for the coolant fans. If the fuse is good, you either have a bad wire or a bad fan. You can always hook up a direct wire to the fan from the battery to get it to work. If it does, the wires are bad. Check for leaks and check the coolant cap. You could have a bad head gasket. A bad water pump can cause overheating, along with the valve and impeller. Check your radiator as well. Anyone of these parts can cause overheating. You could have a bad coolant sensor also. The most common is the thermostat and since you already changed that, next would be the water pump. But if the fans are not working, that is your problem. You probably have a bad wire somewhere. You can get a wire and splice it with the fan wire and run the wire to the battery or fuse box to see if the fans will come on. If they don't, you need a new one.

Car is overheating, Fans wont turn on

First are you sure the fans are good. Unplug the fans and hook directly to the battery and see if they turn. One fan is for the engine and should come on when the car gets hot. The other generally comes on when the a/c system is on. If both fans work hooked directly to the battery they are good go to the cooling fan switch or temperature switch (same thing different name) and make sure it is good. This tells the fan to kick on when the car gets hot. The other one kicks on when a switch on the a/c system tells it to kick on. Check and make sure you are getting power to the fans. Get a test light and ground it to a good ground on the car and probe the plugins going to the fans and insure there is power coming to them when the car is running. If no power fuse is bad or the sending unit is bad.
