How much do you think a 2-door hatchback could handle when towing in Mt Gilead? I might have to tow a small trailer to the dump and I don't know anyone who'd let me borrow a bigger car.

If you're using a tow bar, make sure that the driveline(s) are disconnected and removed or tied up. If you don't disconnect the driveline(s) you really run a huge risk of transmission damage whether it's auto or manual.

SOURCE: Towing capacity

Most smaller cars can tow between 500 and 600kgs unbraked and usually 1000kgs if braked. (trailer has brakes)

You may be getting into a very dangerous situation. You definitely need a tranny cooler, a brake controller installed in your van, electric brakes on all wheels of whatever u r towing, an oil cooler (engine), and u still may be in big trouble. Factory towing packages usually include heavy duty brakes, alternator, heavy duty suspension, bigger tires, sway bars, etc. So even w/ some add-ons u still won't match a factory set up, meaning u shouldn't tow that much weight. OK I do have Towing capabilities for my Captiva 7 LTZ Diesel. The caravan is rated at 1750 kgs loaded. Question- What is the towing capacity of a Captiva 7 Diesel

carpoint.com.au suggests a tow limit of 1700 kgs with a max ball weight of 170 kg
if it is a 2.2 L diesel it is less than a 3.2 L petrol which is 2000 kgs
in your configuration you will need anti-sway bars or load levelers to get the ball weight down to the 170 kgs
then if you load the van for touring it will be well over the specs for the vehicle
the towing capacity should be on the plate inside a front door pillar along with tyre sizes and pressures

We have a heavy duty tow bar so what is the towing capacity

How do I find my hitch system rating? Your hitch system is comprised of three components, the Hitch that is attached to the frame of your car, the Ball Mount (drawbar) and the Hitch Ball. Each component has a rating for capacity. The LOWEST rating of the three components determines the overall rating of your complete hitch system. For instance, you can have a 3500 lb hitch and ball mount, with a 2000 lb ball. Your hitch system is limited to the 2000 lbs towing capacity. https://www.uhaul.com/Articles/Tips/33/How-To-Determine-Your-Hitch-System-Rating
