Question about Chevrolet Cars & Trucks
Was driving on highway when all the sudden i felt what i thought was a tranny slip so i eased off the gas but then my engine dies completely. i try to start it and it sounds like it wants to turn but wont. i scanned it and was given 3 codes, 2 po420's and a po442. these codes i thought were for exhaust issues would they really make my engine die?
420 is for the catalytic convert. Below threshold. Driving for a while (not like a week, maybe 6 months or so)on this code could kill the engine. What happens is the cat will get clogged up or could just melt from to much heat. Easiest way to check is to remove the first 02 sensor and start it . If it starts, replace the catalytic convert. 442 is a small EVAP leak, this is fuel tank pressure and vacuum problems. Depending on the year of your car, newer models will shut down the engine. but will usually start back up after ten minutes or so. Small leaks are usually the gas cap. Either not being tightened down enough or look at the seal, if it is cracking from age replace the cap.

Hey first thing you want to do is make sure its getting fuel .. Try shooting a little gas into the air cleaner and crank it and see if it starts .. if it does your fuel pump might be the problem .. or use a little either instead of gas either will let you know if its a fuel problem .. sounds like to me that might be what it is. holler if you need more and thanks Jerry

The PO441 has to do with your HO2S 2 (Oxygen sensor). You need to check to make sure the wire is not off of the sensor and check the grounds to the Oxygen sensor. Could be a bad Oxygen Sensor. The other code has to do with your Evap system Purge solenoid circuit. Has to do with detecting an improper voltage level. Could be a shorted Purge solenoid.

Sounds like fuel pump is going bad.Change fuel filter to make sure its not that. Then put a fuel pressure gauge on the schraider valve located on the fuel rail (its like the valve on your tire) to check if the pump is up to specs.(Make sure you have rags around to soke up any fuel spillage) With the gauge on have some one start the vehicle as normal and watch the gauge,if it drops below specs replace the pump .TIP:You can borrow a fuel pressure gauge from AutoZone and ask them the fuel pump p.s.i. spec on your vehicle.Free, free, free diagnosis!!!

If you dont have much money, guessing what parts to change gets expensive. First, you need to verify if it has fuel pressure and spark, that will lead you in the direction to start looking for the problem. Pull 1 spark plug wire off and see if it will jump a 1/2" gap, If so, thats good. If no spark, make sure the cam is turning, you may have a broken timing belt.
