Cam, well that depends on DIRECTION

retarded would cause, lower compression and power.

advanced can be more power fast but not slow.

really that is what VVT does, runs one way for slow, and other for fast.

why do you ask.

curious

yours is?

why not check compression,

if the belt slipped, most go to RETARD.

can moves fast and cam says, i dont wont to and it slips,

the crank over runs the cam. so very easy, with belt.

it retards and compression can fall from 150+PSI to 80,

and engine acts like 1Liter , pip squeak engine.

1970 Chevy El Camino starter broke teeth on flywheel. What would cause this?

several reasons
the teeth on the ring gear were damaged from continuous grinding during pinion engagement or engagement of the starter when the engine is running causing a burring of the teeth that altered the mesh ability and jammed the ring gear and pinion
metal in the teeth of the ring gear that causes a jam in rotation
starter motor not engaging before rotating
wrong no of teeth on replacement starter pinion or starter motor

1995 olds achieva 3.1 liter v6 does the starter require shims its a new starter makes noise but doesnt start the engine

I'm not familiar with your vehicle, but I've never encountered a vehicle needing shims on a starter motor.

What may happen is the teeth on the ring gear - the teeth on the outside of the flywheel - become worn. The starter meshes with these teeth and spins the engine to start it. If the teeth are worn the starter cannot mesh with them and consequently, can't turn the engine over.

Because of compression the engine usually stops in the same position - the worn teeth are at the starter.

Try turning the engine by hand/with a wrench through 180 degrees so that any worn teeth are away from the starter, and then try starting it. If the engine spins - the fault is worn teeth on the flywheel.

Starter on my 91 ford ranger 4 wheel drive starts my pickup a couple time then it just spins have changed it 3 times now

Assuming the starter motor spins but doesn't engage to turn engine over to start you could have a bad starter drive which is part of the starter assembly or possibly damaged/missing teeth on flywheel ring gear. Depending on year and model vehicle, some starters you can replace just the starter drive otherwise you need to replace the whole starter. If you changed the starter look at the flywheel.

New starter problems on a 99 suburban 1500 4wd 350 vortec

pull the starter and check the ring gear teeth for burrs and mashed teeth. Ensure that the new starter has the correct number of teeth on the pinion as required by the ring gear or you will have the wrong gear ratio for your vehicle. There are many engines that use the same starter motor but are differentiated by the number of teeth on the pinion. I suspect that will be why there is hard noise and kick back as that is the out of mesh gears trying to work

Why is my newly installed starter sticking and smoking?

Some starter motors that continually miss engagement mash the ring gear teeth to the point that the pinion cannot disengage when the engine starts. This means that the starter becomes in effect a generator with uncomtrolled output. hence it overheats and burns. Have you checked that the teeth on the pinion of the new motor match the teeth on the ring gear. Ie are the teeth on one too course for the other

What do i have to do to swap a inertia starter motor for a pre-engaged starter motor on my ford mk2 escort

A lot of work !!!
The engine or gearbox will removing.
You will need to find a pre-engaged starter ring (not sure that one was produced)
Take off flywheel and change over ring gears.. then reassemble.
Why do you want to change it ?
