Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

1998 Ford explorer stuck in 4L, fuses ok.

It is a 4 x 4 not an all wheel drive. All fuses check ok, but no power to the dash switch. Is there a relay that I can check?

SOURCE: My 2004 F-150 Ford Truck will not engage into 4 wheel drive low.

I am going to ask a dumb question....do you have it in neutral and the brake mashed when you switch to 4WD LOW? I believe that is what my book says to do.

SOURCE: 1994 ford explorer 4 wheel drive not working

Go to the engine compartment where the relays are located with the fuses. Check or replace the 4 wheel auto engage relay , maybe is not working. Is very clearly mark, I believe is the top right one looking at the bost front front of vehicle to the back. There is a diagram drawing of each relay in the cover, so you can't go wrong.

You can't turn it on by the switch on the radio ? Nothing showing on the radio display ? If not check these fuses
Blown central junction box (CJB) Fuse 1 (7.5A), Fuse 20 (7.5A), Fuse 28 (7.5A), and Fuse 29 (25A) . The switch on the steering wheel should not stop the radio from being turned on at the radio !

Stuck in 4x4 low switch on dash 1998

It is your 4 x 4 electronic shifter at fault. Located on your transfer case it is mostly black/brown plastic electronic switch that engages and disengages your transfer case from low, high 4 x 4 or 2 wheel drive.
Check connections for electric continuity and replace it if there is no power...

1998 ford explorer auto, 4h,4l. stuck in 4l

Hello, Try keeping your foot on the brake pedal. Then shift the gearshift to neutral and then turn the 4x4 knob to the position you wish.

If this does not work, verify your rear brake lights are working. Then look under the dash at the top of the brake pedal lever and try to position the switch so that it works.

Then go back to my opening statement.

Check BJB ( aka Battery Junction Box, Engine Compartment fuse panel ) Fuse #17. This is the power to the Transfer Case shift relay, which powers the Shift motor in the Transfer case and power to the magnetic clutch coil ( via the transfer case relay ).

The other fuse to check is the CJB ( aka Central Junction Box, cab fuse panel ) Fuse #23.

If both fuses check good, time to check for power on the connector for the shift relay and the shift motor. The power from BJB Fuse # 17 is the Dark Green w/ Light Green stripe ( this is hot at all times ).
The old school test is to lightly hit the back of the transfer case, to see if the shift motor is hung up.
Here are the diagrams, so you can see what I am talking about.

I have a 2005 Ford F150 4x4 crewcab. I can not

Is the 4 wheel light flashing on the dash. If so the problem could be in the computer if it is electronic 4 wheel drive. It can also be the motor on the transfer case or the switch on the dash. You can check the switch on the dash and see if you are getting power to it and out of it. Then you can check and see if you are getting power to the motor on the transfer case. If you are getting power in the switch but none coming out of it when switch to the 4 wheel drive position it is the switch but if you are and are getting power down to the motor on the transfer case it is the motor on the transfer case. If you are not getting power to the switch then it is in the control computer for it mounted in the dash behind the radio.

My brake lights do not work for 1998 ford explorer

Check and make sure you have the right bulbs and fuses installed. However, it sounds like a wiring problem. Probably at the rear of the vehicle. If you are in a "snow" area state, the ice and snow formation can break or pull wires apart. Also, check your ground wires.

First check your 4 wheel drive switch to make sure it works, for on an off settings. (Use a volt-ohm meter for this. On should show continuity in the readings (if digital then it should show zeros in the dial) Off should show no continuity or 1.0 in the dial.

1. Check your fuses.
2, IF OK, then check your FUSE LINKS.
3. IF OK, then check your 4 Wheel Drive relay in the fuse box.
4. IF OK, then check continuity of the wires harness to the 4 wheel drive switch for DC voltage.
