If the engine is not locked up, it could be the neutral safety switch.

I have a 06 Toyota corolla and have changed the starter 3 times but it still won't start. When I turn the key I hear a single click and a humming sound

Do the following:
- Clean the battery terminals with Luke-warm water, dry them with dry cloth and fix them firmly.
- Check the battery to engine ground wire. Remove the engine side ground wire and clean it with sand paper to provide a good contact. Replace this wire with a thick one to hold the current during starting. Also battery to starter wire should be thick enough to hold the current during starting.
- Check the alternator output and the battery health.

How to install a starter on a 2006 toyota corolla?

They only have 2 bolts holding them in. Unbolt/unclip the wires from the starter and then remove those 2 bolts. Replacing it is the same process in reverse.

Vehicle will not start.

If it's making one single click at the turn of the key and it doesnt crank it is likely that you need a starter but first check your connections to the battery and the starter. Make sure they are tight and clean. Also make sure engine isn't locked up by turning it by hand. If it all checks out replace starter.

Turn key, click from engine compartment but starter does not engage

Hi Thomas,
First things first. Any time you have an automotive question please include the year, make, model and engine size of the vehicle in question. This will help give you the most accurate information I possible can.

To generically address your problem....

A single click every time you turn the key to the start position usually indicates a bad starter. There are a couple things you can check.

1. Make sure there is twelve volts on the large wire to the starter when you try to start.
2. Make sure you can turn the engine over by hand

If those two pan out than tap the starter with a small hammer while a helper holds the key in the crank position (be prepared for the vehicle to start!). If the starter cranks over replace it.

If its a single click and everything goes dead until you let go of the key and wait a couple of seconds, check the battery connections.

A series of rapid clicks when you hold the key in the crank position usually indicates a bad/weak battery.

Let me know if you have any further questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thank you for using!

Single loud click when trying to start. Was driving fine for long period of time then shut off and wont turn over

Battery or starter. First make sure both battery connections are clean and tight. Check the battery to make sure it is holding 12 volts. If so there is a 99% chance the starter & solonoid need replacing

When i turn key to start car i sometimes get a clicking ive had a new starter motor got new battery any ideas

It could be a loose or corroded connection somewhere in the wiring. Make sure your hot and ground cables are tight on the battery. Then make sure your connection at the starter is solid. Make sure there is no corrosion on the cables or connections too. If this all checks good, the replacement starter could be faulty. I've had many replacement parts be bad right out of the box.

SL1 won't start, just single click, electronics work

Try charging the battery or jumping the car, your alternator could be shot and not charging the battery.

1999 Toyota Corolla CE. For about 2 months, the engine does not start immediately. I need to turn the ignition key several times until it starts. Each time when I turn the key, a clicking sound happens...

it sounds like either your having a short at the starter or the ignition switch is bad, I am leaning towards the issue being the starter, usually when the ignition switch is going bad there will be no click,
