Question about 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
Not sure if that title tells all. but 1990 Olds Cutlass Ciera 3300, 40,000 miles. Seems to idle too fast, when slowing down for a stop light, it feels like it wants to go. If I take my foot off the acclerator at 30mph it doesn't slow down. Once stopped, it seems to relax. So, I removed the Idle Air control sensor. It was dirty, went to replace it, and it slipped and is lost somewhere...lol I ordered a replacement. But while looking for the part, I peered into the port and saw what seemed like a gasket, stuck my finger in and came out with a very dirty O ring. Does the sensor had and O ring, and could this be it? or is it possible it's one from inside the throttle body? I'm waiting on the new part, but wondering if I should remove the entire throttle body, it seemed like there was a lot of carbon in there. The car was my aunts, it sat for most of the past four years, she died just over a year ago and I got it from the estate. It has issues but with only 37,000 miles on it when I got it, I couldn't pass it up.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

It isn't a speed sensor. In 1989 all GM front drives were hydraulic shift. Do you know if it is a three speed or four speed. The speed sensor in 1989 only controls the speedometer. Also can you describe the problem. Does it just slip? Only certain gears?

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

sounds like ecm sensor problems.does check engine light come on at all?you may be able to get a code reader at autozone to retrieve computer stored codes, this would more than likely lead you in the right direction.some shops will do a computer check cheap if you are unable to perform this task.however the code readers come with instructions and are user friendly;-)

Check your lockout sensor on your transmission by unpluging it and try driveing it with the sensor unpluged. It should be located on the side of the transmission between the transmission and the fan, under the air filter box.
