Need to check wiring is getting to the fan if not may not be the fan that is at fault or the switches but the rheostat, sometimes these are on the housing but can be seperate but will be in close proximity

SOURCE: 2000 Ford Contour Acceleration Probs between 40-55 mph

Transmission was initially misdiagnosed as being ok. The problem was the "range sensor", which showed up on the transmission shops diagnostic computer on a second look.

Replacement of the range sensor solved the problem. This was a $150.00 fix. Unfortunately a lot of other cash was spent because of the initial miss.

Howcan you check a Low speed radiator relay in 1998 ford contour

A mechanic would check for voltage from the battery, voltage from the key switch, and ground signal from the computer.
You should be able to jumper the contacts from the batt voltage to the fan lead to make the fan run.

I am not mechanically inclined so if I get an answer, keep that in mind. My 1998 Contour keeps jerking and shifting when I reach about 55 mph. I noticed the fan is not moving unless I turn the air on and...

Your vehicle jerking may be as simple as a dirty air filter that needs to be replaced. But a more serious problem would be a fuel pump defect, or the fuel injection system.
Now you didn't mention if you were driving a manual or automatic. So in the case of your car shifting, if its a manual it could be a misaligned transmission or something is loose in the clutch housing. But if your vehicle is an automatic you should check the transmission fluid (you do this while the car is running).

Sputtering Engine

This is normal. Four cylinder engines do not have a lot of horsepower and torque.

When your a/c compressor and cooling fan kick on, there is a load on your engine that casues rpm to drop. When it kicks off, the load goes away and the rpms go back up.

Your a/c system is the cycling type that increases fuel economy. It should cycle 4 to 7 times/minute at 70 degrees F.

Please rae as fixed if this answers your question.

PS. With the a/c (and defrost) off, it should not drop any rpms.
