Start the engine and get it up to operating temperature. Take a spray bottle with water in it and spray the vaccum hoses and around the intake gaskets. If the water affects your idle, you possibly have a very common intake gasket leak. That motor is well know for vacuum leaks around the intake gaskets. You can also try spraying carb cleaner, but be very careful with that. Hope this helps. Sounds like a vacuum leak to me.

Hi, the problem you are having sounds like the differential needs replacing this can be expensive and hard work but not doing this can cause further damage to your vehicle so its better get it done sooner rather than later.
If on the other hand your only getting a vibration through the steering wheel then this could be that the wheels need balancing.

Attach a vacuum gauge to the manifold and a tachometer to the coil turn the adjustment needle valve in till the engine stumbles, then slowly back it out ''till you obtain the highest vacuum reading and best (steady) idle. then adjust the linkage stop screw, watching the tach for proper idle speed.

the loss of power I was experiencing was because the secondary was not working. The vacuum was not strong enough to open the secondary.
I found a stronger vacuum and hooked it up there. Still need to fine tune the adjustments on the Carb. Have twice the power I had but still need adjusting.

Have the catalytic converters checked. They are notorious for going bad which can cause those symptoms as well.

Check for a leak at the intake manifold you can use some soap in a spray bottle spray along the intake and heads it will change the idle if its leaking

The carburator needs to be retuned under a load to correct the problem. Take the truck back to the place were the carburator was worked on, and have them to check the carburator out for correct adjustments. Hope this will help you !!

How do you get the carb off of the intake on a 1986 dodge ram 50 truck?


this truck have four bolts , but the two on the back you will have to unscrew from the bottom of the intake , just look or feel on the bottom of the intake
