Question about 2000 Mercury Sable

Check Transaxle Ligh flashing shortly after replacing spark plugs

I had the spark plugs replaced in my car after misfire code. The car was missing at about 30-45 mph. The plugs corrected that problem, but then started a dead miss when the engine idles especially when under a load (AC on). No code shows so they can't determine the cause of the miss. Now the check transaxle light flashes at times. It goes off every time I turn the engine off, but comes back on after driving a bit. It shows a P0741 code (torque converter clutch stuck off). I was told by one mechanic that I should park the car until I can rebuild the transmission. Another mechanic said I could drive it until it goes, but it won't pass inspection. It has 137,000 miles on it. Is it possible that they didn't get all the hoses connected, and that's causing the transaxle code? Will the code cause the car to fail inspection?

    Thanks.

I would like to clarify. The misfire was more than six weeks ago. Replacing the plugs removed the code..mechanic said coils were okay. When I got the car back, it ran perfectly on the road, but I noticed a new miss only when idling. The miss comes and goes but is was worse with frequent stops and the AC on. I took it back...no problems detected...drive until light comes on. This is still happening...NEW problem...Transaxle Warning Light flashing. I know this means torque converter...replace transmission... &1500-$1800. One technician says park or fix now; the other says okay to drive locally...may not be a problem for a while, but it won't pass inspection. Could one problem be related to the other? I read in another post about a similar problem where it could be the vacuum line from intake to manifold loose or damaged. Will it pass inspection with the P0741 code?

Trans codes are not Emission related & should be accepted for inspection All the other trans advice I would disregard ,purely speculation & not any real testing especially of TTC Solenoid we discussed You have a solenoid issue, not torque converter failure or trans failure.

Hi, just a quick add on to below don't overlook the HT plug leads as they can be damaged when removing from plugs. Hope this will help,P

First --- spark plugs seldom fail to fire & cause misfires,
unless they are badly worn & you also have other issues,
such as ignition coil or module problems or vacuum leaks,
to name two.
Also codes are not needed to diagnose any vehicle problem.
To say they can't diagnose a cylinder misfire or a torque converter lock-up solenoid or codes, means you went to the wrong shop or they misunderstood your intentions to spend any money, to actually perform the necessary testing or diagnostic procedures

SOURCE: "check engine light flashing"

The flashing check engine light is typical of a misfire issue. There are two things I would do to start with.

1. Take the vehicle to an auto parts store like Autozone and have them hook up their scan tool so that they can retrieve stored trouble codes. Even if the check engine light is not on, they should be able to retrieve recently stored codes.

2. Do a complete tune up. New plugs, new plug wires, new air filter, new fuel filter if it has not been done recently.

If the parts store pulls the codes and they cannot tell you what they mean, post them up here and I will see what I can dig up for you.

Have changed all plugs and coil packs but still giting miss in 1 3 5 cil think its a short in wire hornins but cant find a diagram

If you are getting a misfire code on those three cylinders (all on just that one bank of engine!), it's probably not an electrical short, but something else causing misfire. Misfire codes are set when the power output from that cylinder is less than expected: the pcm senses a crankshaft lag in power output and sets the code.

Typically, misfires are caused by weak or missing spark, or by fuel/air mixture problems, or by low cylinder compression. The fact that your misfires are all on one bank (side) of the engine sounds suspiciously like the fuel/air mixture might be wrong for that bank, or the cylinder compression is low on that bank.

You could use a spark tester just to check spark on 1, 3, & 5. Use a calibrated spark tester to compare both banks-all 6 cylinders. I think you will see equal spark at all cylinders. The only shorts would be in the spark plug wires. And not likely all 3 went bad at once, although you could check them, maybe swap a few around and see if the misfire follows the wire.

Start looking for air or vacuum leaks that only affect bank 1. Possibly an intake manifold leak, could also be an exhaust leak, something that affects the air/fuel mixture in the bank 1 cylinders. Also you could do a compression test of the cylinders to make sure bank 1 is good, same compression as in bank 2 (the other side of engine). Just some tips to help you out, good luck.

Have 2005 lincoln aviator - has miss at 30-55 MPH - no codes replaced all coils ( ford) & spark plugs (twice) - repair vacuum leak at PCV Still misses -- no codes -- help

The COPS (coils) may have shorted the drivers in the PCM (computer). You should get a misfire code for each cylinder misfiring though.

Slim possibility, but very expensive unless you have a service contract.
LINCOLN: 1999-2004 Navigator
2002-2003 Blackwood
2003-2005 Aviator MERCURY: 2003-2004 Marauder
ISSUE: Some 1999-2004 Navigator, 2002-2003 Blackwood, 2003-2005 Aviator, 2003-2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316.
ACTION: Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s).
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE CONDITION:
  1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.
  2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.
  3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8. NOTE: DO NOT TRANSFER SPARK PLUGS. INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS IN REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD AND CAM ASSEMBLY. NOTE: THE ENGINE MISFIRE CONCERN IS TYPICALLY EXHIBITED ON THE LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD AND RARELY ON THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD. UNLESS CONFIRMED, THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD SHOULD NOT BE REPLACED AS AN "EXTRA MEASURE" SERVICE PRECAUTION. NOTE: THE REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD WILL NOT IMPROVE OR REDUCE ENGINE HORSEPOWER OR TORQUE ABOVE ADVERTISED LEVELS.

1998 ford expedition misses, ,shudders, replace spark plugs 6 months ago, and 2 COP's. #4 misfires again!!

The coil is not seated correct or it has become bad also. These have a tendency to mess up on a regular basis. I use a di-electric grease on mine to help it from misfiring. I would take that #4 back off and re-seat it and see how it performs.
