05 Equinox not able to remove right rear brake drum

Hi it sounds as if your brake linings have broken away you will need to remove the drum to see.

if rear drums then you need to remove the drums ,clean the lip on the outside of the drum the adjust the brakes up manually and they will fit snug with the lip removed ,use a small radial disk cutter for this ,then the handbrake will be right and the footbrake will be hard as well ,just adjusting the cable will result in the vehicle failing the inspection due the handbrake lever inside the drum being over the 180? position ,us old fleet diesel fitters never die we answer questions on here

REMOVING REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY
1. Release the parking brake and remove the rear
brake drum.
If the rear brake drum cannot be removed easily,
do the following:-
2.Remove the hole rubber and insert a screwdriver
through the hole into the backing plate, and hold the
automatic adjust lever away from the adjuster.
3.Using another screwdriver, contract the brake shoe
by turning the adjuster.
4. Take out the brake drum from the flange.
5. remove the shoe hold down spring cup, shoe hold down spring, pin and front side brake shoe.
6. Remove the tension spring. Remove the shoe return spring from the rear brake shoe and remove the parking brake shoe strut set.
7. Remove the shoe holding spring cup, shoe hold spring, pin and rear brake shoe.
8. separate the parking brake cable.
9. Remove the automatic adjust lever tension spring and remove the automatic adjust lever.
10. remove the C-washer and remove the parking brake shoe lever.
NOTE: Do not use any solvent like gasoline to wash the brake parts.
Always wear safety goggles and mask before using compressed air.

These have automatic adjusters. If it does have an adjuster slot it is at the base of the drum and probably covered by a rubber insert to keep dirt out. To use the Auto Adjuster find a long flat area clear of obstructions, put the vehicle in revers and accelerate in Reverse to about 5 mph and pop, stomp the brake pedal, a few times. That will activate the adjusting arm.

the fluid is brake fluid frond the wheel cylinder...the reason why u cant get the drum off is either a rust lip on the drum or the rear brake shoes have ground into the brake drum...u need to adjust the self adjusting star wheel inward to loosen the rear shoes allowing the drum to be removed...on the back side of the drum is what is called a backing plate there will be a oval hole with a rubber plug in it remove it an use a brake spoon to de adjust the rear shoes by turning the brake spoon up ..if u dont have the oval hole u will need to cut it out of the backing plate there may be 2 oval stamps in the backing plate, cut out the one that is on the right when u r looking at the backing plate

Hello, there is two ways to remove the drums. First way is to use a hammer and tap the back side of the drum as you rotate it untill it becomes free. Second way is to use a brake spool to back the shoes off, on the back side of the drum is a small opening it may be covered by a piece of rubber. Just pop that out, using the brake spool rotate the star wheel key till the shoes are backed off the drum than it should come right off.

First block the tires on the front of the car, front and rear of the tire. place the transmission in park, do not set the parking brake. Jack up the rear end, use jack stands on the rear. You should loosen the lug nuts on the wheels before jacking up.
With the truck lifted and properly supported, remove the wheels. This will expose the drum. Tap off the drum gently with a light hammer, the drum should pull off. Remove drum, it is a good idea to replace the shoes at the same time. This is done by removing the adjuster, the springs, then replace shoes as removed. Use brake cleaner on new drums before putting on, install the drum same as removed, put on wheel, lower truck and tighten the lug bolts. To adjust, turn star inside the rubber grommet on inside of drum. then you can adjust automatically by placing vehicle in reverse and apply the brakes until snug. This will get you done. Enjoy.

You need to de-adjust your rear brakes and/or slacken off the park brake cable to remove the drum as the chances are the drum has a wear lip that the shoes are getting hung up on. ( first make sure there isn't a little retaining screw holding the drum on !..visible with the wheel removed)

You will literally have to take a rubber mallet and beat on them all the way around until they work themselves loose enough to remove them by hand. You won't damage them as long as you use a rubber mallet.

If you have disc brakes in the rear it is very simple. The rear disc has a inner drum that has small brake shoes. These shoes rarely wear out. To adjust it take off the rear tire. Inside the rear of the unit is a little rubber plug. Remove it. Inside is a clicker that can be adjusted with a small screwdriver. One way on the clicker will tighten the other loosen. Spin the rear wheel hub until you feel it tighten as you move the clicker expander. You will feel the hub getting tigher harder to turn and hear the pads making contact with the inner drum. Repeat on the other rear drum. They are supposed to be self adjusting, but I find this not true.
