Yes, but first, just in case this is an interference engine, turn the crankshaft back about 20 degrees, a small bit, so all cylinders in the block will not be at top. Now set both cams on their marks. Then return crankshaft to the TDC mark.

I CANT GET IT TO START GOT SPARK GOT PETROL I,AM NOT SURE ABOUTTHE TIMING BELT AND THE MARKS ON THE CAMS IF I LINE UP THE MARKS ON THE CAM THEN MY ROTOR DONT LINE UP WITH MY DIST ON NO 1

You don't say what car or how many cylinders, so lets try a generic fix. With the tappet cover off, turn the engine until the valves on #1 cylinder rock. At this point the timing mark on your pulley should line up with the timing mark on the casing, if they do not your cam timing is out. Note that when these marks line up, your distributor should be pointing 180 deg. from the #1 plug lead position. You need to turn the crankshaft 360 deg. to get #1 TDC.

We need to know where the cam timing marks go on a 1998 Hyundai Accent. The cam was turned after the belt was removed. We need to know how to aline the camshaft.

Hi

The cam dowel should be at 12:00. the hole in the cam sprocket should be line up with the cam dowel, with cam sprocket assembled to cam, you will see looking through the cam sprocket a red marking on the head, which lines up with the dowel. Down at the crank, make sure the cut out mark on the crank spocket is lined up with the notch on the oil pump cover.

Thanks for using FixYa - Steve

Where is the timing mark on the camshaft for replacing a timing belt on a 1997 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder? I can find the hole in the sprocket but there is no mark on the bearing at the 12 o'clock or 1...

The mark on the bearing cap is actually an indentation. It is very difficult to see if the area is dirty. I usually roll the engine over till the area of the mark is between the spokes of the cam gear. Then I clean off the area and take white out and paint the mark. Then roll the engine over til the marks on the crank line up. Tehn using a mirror you should be able to see the white out through the hole in the cam gear.

Settings to replace cam belt

There should be marks stamped into the cam and crank gears that need to line up with corresponding marks on the backing plate before you remove the cambelt.

If there are no markings, you need to make your own.

Rotate crank until at TDC (reinstall the crank drivebelt pulley loosely and front cover to do this, then take them off again)

Once at TDC, use correction fluid and mark the crank position twice - once on the crank gear itself and a corresponding mark on the backing plate.

Ditto for the cam gear.

Make sure these marks are aligned when cambelt is replaced, turn engine one full revolution when new cambelt is on to double check marks line up where they should and you're good to go.

Sometimes the cam isn't marked but the crank gear is. In that case line up the crank gear and use the above step to mark the cam gear.

Be precise as the cam gear will most likely move when you take the cambelt off due to tension from the cam on the rockers

Hope this helps :)
