Old post , main or on Mopars, main is called ASD relay
"auto shut down relay" it the anti' crash and burn , relay.
and both relays, for sure cut all fuel and spark.
in fact spark loss, cuts IT. by design by logic in the ECU/PCM

the main relay passes power to the PCM or its major players, fuel and spark.. use a scan tool to see why main drops out.
or if a vary old car (pre 1996' USA ) insert the diagnostic jumper clip
in the the CHECK plug, and see the FLASH out codes.
this tells you after 5 seconds cranking what sensor is bad, for that spark is dead. The 5 second rule works on all EFI cars made.
(its actually crank turns, but the starter rpm makes this unknown)
so 5 seconds handles all cases. Alaska to Key West.
see the FSM pages here

most FSM never explain the logic, its so sad....

Where is fuel pump relay switch located on a 94 gmc Sonoma. Cannot locate to test. Truck starts but as driving the is a click noise and shuts off. It restarts after a minute. Please help

Check in main fuse block with other relays. Should be labeled. Relay kicking out may be caused by overheating = bad fuel pump or dirty filter. Test fuel pressure too.

Will only start sometime when the fuel pump sensor kicks on? what will make it do that?

If your main ecu is bad, it will cause a delay in power reaching the fuel pump relay, causing a delayed start condition. The check engine light has to come on, in the dash, for the fuel pump relay to get power.

Car has plenty of fuel but wont turn over like its out of gas

A common problem with this year Honda is the main relay becomes hot and the internal connections open up, causing a no start condition. I am assuming everything else is in good working condition. The main relay is located on the driverside kick panel up about 12 inches from the floor, mounted with a single bolt and looks like this;

That is exactly what a defective Main relay will do. The reason is there are two circuits that run thru this relay; One circuit is the fuel injector circuit and the second is the fuel pump circuit. This creates heat and when the relay gets old, it starts to fail. I have removed relays in the past, and placed them in a freezer for about 30 seconds, reinstalled them and the car would start. This was a temporary fix and replacing the relay will cure your no start issue. During hot summer weather is when this issue rears its ugly head. You can also open all the windows to allow the inside of the car to cool down a bit, and then try to start it.

1992 honda accord turns over, but doesn't start--there is plenty of fuel--it fired for a moment then died. It is fuel injected.

Car cranks but dose not start, there is no power to distributator or fuel pump

I suspect the at this point, the main relay is defective. This relay controls power to fuel and spark circuits.

The PGM-FI Main Relay is actually comprised of two individual internal relays. When the ignition switch is initially turned ON , the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) supplies ground to the PGM-FI Main Relay. This ground triggers one of the PGM-FI internal relays that sends battery voltage to the fuel pump for two seconds to pressurize the fuel system.
When the engine is running the PCM supplies a continuous ground to the PGM-FI Main Relay. The supplied ground keeps the relay in the "closed" position providing electrical current to the fuel pump, keeping the fuel loop pressurized while the engine runs.
If the engine is not running with the ignition on, the PCM cuts the ground to the PGM-FI Main Relay, causing the relay to "open" and stop the electric current flow to the fuel pump. As mentioned previously, if the engine is not running, the PCM will only supply ground to the PGM-FI Main Relay for two seconds when the ignition switch is initially switched to the ON position.
The PGM-FI Main Relay also supplies electrical power to the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve and to the fuel injectors.

If the engine starts and continues to run, the PGM-FI Main Relay is working and does not need to be replaced.
  1. Locate and remove the relay.

On some models of the Civic and Civic del Sol it is located to the left of the steering column under the dash. Many later models position it either near the passenger right side kick panel under the dash or by the driver left side kick panel up under the dash.
  1. Attach the battery positive terminal to the No. 2 terminal.
  2. And the battery negative terminal to the No. 1 terminal.
  3. Check for continuity between terminal No. 5 and 4.
  4. If there is no continuity, replace the relay and retest

Feul pump not kicking in.already replaced where do i look.

Which relay did you replace? Typically the Main Relay is the cause of the fuel pump or ECU not having power.
