Hi there,

The fuel
solenoid wire usually frays in the black plastic wire covering under the
carb or intake manifold . No soldering needed .The harness starts in the
middle of the firewall directly behind the engine .It all comes off with
some patience .It's also very greasy ! I think the most difficult area for
removal is the front of engine where is crosses one side to the other .
Alongside the block and branches off to fuel solenoid.

The overdrive solenoid is connected to the transmission itself on this Volvo. You will find the switch on the passenger side of the transmission. It looks like this

As a means of testing operation of the solenoid - you can ground out this switch by turning the key in the ignition into the on position. Make sure engine is off and the transmission in 4th gear and listen for the click of the soleniod on the back of the overdrive. Also the light on the dash should iluminate as well.

Hi, the relay for the overdrive is located in the center of the dash to the left of the glove box way up under the dash. It's a long reach so use a flashlight. Enjoy!

Why won't 1989 Volvo 240 shift into high gear anymore?

Either the O/D solenoid or relay has gone bad. However if the light operates you may have to much wear in the main housing in the rear of the transmission causing the pressure to be low in the case a transmission replacement is in order.

Volvo 240 transmission

Problem is with the transmission fluid. Get it changed and get the oil filter changed if required. Get the conditions of the gears checked. Those jerks may be due to broken or damaged teeth.

Check your brake lights and see if they are working. The solenoid in the shifter is energized by you stepping on the brake. If your break lights do not work... your stuck in park. This can be caused by a bad brake light switch located above your brake pedal or.... a blown hazard / brake light fuse. Check them first.....

Check the transmission filter, may be clogged up, do not change the oil, keep the same oil when replacing filter, trust me to avoid transmission repair.

940 volvo comes out of overdrive without touching button  If its similar to a 240 (and it most likely is) you can purchase a block off plate for the solenoid so you won't lose 4th gear (actually its OD from torque converter lockup).

Auto transmission will not go into high gear.

Just went thru this on my 93 240. There's a solenoid inside the glove box, on the left side that needed replacing, with age it started getting fussy, and one day I had overdrive, and the same afternoon I didn't, then next day it was fine, then it wasn't, and so on...Most annoying driving around in 3rd all day....Anyways, the part was about 75$ at a dealer, and installation was about 5 minutes...Solved the problem just fine...Also have your mechanic check the shift needed changing at the same time as the solenoid...jda/boston

Stuck in overdrive

Overdrive relay usually fixes the problem. With the engine idling quietly, press the OD switch on the shift lever. Do you hear a click? If not, it is probably the relay. Located behind the glove box, passenger side. toward the center console. Pick up a used one on Ebay ( about $10 bucks) and swap it out. Cured my problem right away. Be sure you change the correct relay because Volvo hides several back there. I would buy the spare, then match it with the one now installed. If not the relay, you will need a new solenoid in the transmission. About $200 installed.

It's possible the shift lock solenoid, the wiring, or the fuse is bad.

Volvo 240 GL Transmission

You have an overdrive relay issue. The tansmission is really a four-speed box, but the OD selector either locks our fourth gear or allows the car to shift normally into fourth. I use the OD on my volvo all the time, because the revs drop in half when the OD is activated, The relay is located behind the glove box, toward the center console. $10 buck on Ebay and your transmission should shift correctly again. I would try that BEFORE more expensive fixes, like OD solenoid $200 or transmission control module. Just for kicks a picked up a spare ECU on Ebay for $10 because these get costly if and when they go. Easy fix, though, a couple of plugs.
