Open Question

My 3f toyota 80 series is missing and popping out of the exhaust 1 it has a straight through extractor system 2 . new spiralcord leads, points ,condenser3. new head gasket 4.new inlet / exhaust manifold gasket as they are all in line on the 3f engine5. new exhaust valves6.resurfaced inlet valves 7 seats have all been done8.new fuel pump9.new coil10.i also have black spark plugs and the timing is correct and the 3f engine shakes slightly any ideas what else it could be ?????????please help ???

i would first check the timing and if that does not fit i would take the cover back off and look at the belt for a bad or missing tooth

quick test , replace a piece of the fuel line with a clear plastic one, chaeck for air bubbles especially with less than half tank

Does this happen when the engine is cold or all the time? You may have a cracked head gasket. does your car use water.
Also have you compression tested the motor. This will tell you if the engine has got lower compression in one of the cylinders which will help to narrow down the problem with the motor.

check the earth for the anti dieseling wire to the carby. I had the same prob and the small wire to the carby on the passenger side had a crook earth. This was forund after a number of previous attempts to solve the issue

Hi John, I suggest first carrying out a compression test. As you'll know a difference of readings between combustion chambers can result in misfire and loss of power. It would seem to me that if pressure is building in the cooling system there is something wrong with the head or head gasket. Did you have crack detection carried out? When removing the head I'm guessing you checked for ridge wear in the cylinder bores, so we won't go in that direction. I'm also guessing that the head was skimmed and is not warped? I guess you have used the correct torque setting when refitting the head? If not, as you'll know a leakage between the cylinder head and subassembly can result in combustion leaking into the water jackets, causing pressurization of the cooling system. Did you use genuine replacements when replacing the points and condenser? Make sure the new plug cables are all in good condition. These days we're getting plenty of dud replacement parts inclusive of condenser's and contact breakers! I suggest you carry out a resistance inspection. The ignition timing is as you know, also critical. Did you carry out a strobe setting of the ignition timing or static? I suggest a strobe. Open the peep hole cover on the bell housing and mark the timing at eight degrees BTDC on the flywheel and put a spot of paint on the pointer and reset timing with the engine idling at seven hundred and fifty RPM. Once timing is set, adjust the mixture control screw on the valve body of the carburetor, turning it inwards very slowly. If the engine begins to slow and become "lumpy," turn the screw outwards until the engine speeds up and runs as smoothly and as fast as possible. If the RPM increases too much, reduce by using the idle adjustment screw mounted on the linkages of the throttle butterfly mechanism. An incorrectly set float can also result in flooding and poor fuel consumption. Let me know how you get on. Regards John

Exhaust system ofr jumbuck


you can go cheap and use a common bend extractor and regular exhaust system or you can get better with a mandrel bent extractor. Use performance muffler and pipes about 1/2 inch bigger than standard . Extra large looks good but will reduce performance and the cost will not be worth the effort. Exhaust systems to work have to be tuned to the engine . They have to be designed so that the shock wave from a power stroke enters the extractor at the exact moment that the previous shock wave that reached the end of the exhaust pipe has turned into a low pressure area and travels back to the extractor to arrive at the moment the exhaust valve is opening so allowing the compression gas from the power stroke to exit into a small low pressure area which in turn sucks out the used gas. That is why wrong size exhausts area a waste because the low pressure hits the exhaust valve and becomes a high pressure area as it rebounds back down the pipe and the exhaust dumps the power gas into a pressure area and not a vacuum. There are books on tuning exhaust systems that will explain it in more detail but you will find that bigger is not better . It just looks tuff and noisy and is next to useless when it comes to performance.

You did not say what model carb you put in. Did you check the float level? Metering rods or jets?

I have a landrover series 3, 2 1/4 petrol. fitted is a v8 su carb and lpg system. it seems to be over fueling as the exhaust is popping away when i slow down. where do I find an adjuster screw to reduce...


do not touch the fuel and play with it as you could do more harm than good ,the popping down the exhaust is caused by a air leak in the exhaust system as this is the most common cause ,but as this vehicle is so old it was was not designed to run on unleaded fuel and i suspect that the valves are not stelite coated so they have burnt seats caused by lack of lead in the fuel which was a lubricant for the valve seats as well .Now you havent stated what year this vehicle is but they havent fitted SU carbs for the last 25yrs at least so this later one is more of my suspicion and if iam right then use a substitute lead additive in the fuel after you have removed the heads and ground the valves in .

sounds like crank sensor is getting wet. Don't go through water until you figure out a way to protect it.

You need to Replace the Padding underneath the Carpet. It is there in part too Absorb this Heat.
