SOURCE: 1997 chevy astro no reverse but drives

The band on the 4L60 E applies in 2nd & 4th (not reverse). The sun shell is the most common failure when you loose reverse in the 4L60E but you will also loose 2nd & 4th. It is possible that the rev clutch is also distressed. May also have some valve body issues

SOURCE: transmission

Well ,

If the fluid is dark, burnt , or has metal or dark clutch material.
The transmission has a burnt up clutches ,the sun shell in most cases with this transmission is the cause of failure inside. The sun shell holds the clutches and steels in place . When the sun shell breaks the transmission is loosing pressure inside. Then the clutch are not engaging . This is why the transmission is slipping This is a very common problem with this vehicle. The sensors/ soleniods are located in the valve body of the transmision. There are some cases where a transmission shop can tighten the sun shell or bands. This could be a temporary fix, The best thing to do is have the transmission replaced or rebuilt at your local transmission repair shop

How many liters of dex 3 is needed to change automatic transmission fluid and filter on 1995 astro awd van

Should take between 4 and 6 quarts of fluid. I would use dex 6. All upgrades in fluid will work on older transmissions.

otad doesn't help ---did the trans come out of an 05 astro van s-10 blazer /jimmy s-15 or safari and it your awd because you need to match the rwd with an rwd and a awd with an awd /4wd from above and the unit has to be compatible with the 05

Front axle is getting hot and it starts to clunk when turning1993chevy astro awd extaxle GU4

Sounds like the CV joint boot got damaged and let contaminates in. The clicking indicates the part has malfunctioned and must be replaced. Clicking causes friction and friction causes heat. I would advise against driving the van until the repair is made to keep the transmission from failing. AWD transmissions must have all axles in place and working to avoid damage.

What will happen if i remove the shaft for the frontwheel drive from this alwheel drive 1998 chey astro

You will end up destroying the transfer case, The transfer case is electronic and not mechanical as the older ones and the speed sensors will throw off the transfer case, if you lose traction to the rear end in the rain, snow or around a corner. The transfer case may activate and deactivate and without the front drive shaft could result in the transfer case to literately explode, also know as grenade. At that point, your looking at a transfer case and may be a transmission. You van runs on RWD unless the rear wheel start to lose traction and then the encoder motor activates the transfer case turning your astro in too a AWD. This was done to save gas, the older AWD transfer case was casing the idle arm to wear out prematurely and the gas economy was 17 MPG and the new AWD system that you have brought the van to 22 MPG. Why do you want to remove it??? if you do i guess you can disconnect the wire harness to the Encoder motor to the transfer case. Good luck and keep me posted.
