Noise or leaking coolant or both.

If your water pump is going bad or is bad, it will make a squeeling noise whent he vehicle is running. It sounds like a chirping bird and is very annoying. Also, there is a spot on the bottom of the water pump that is designed to leak when it is going bad. You will notice that after you shut off your vehicle that it will begin to leak under your car. You will not notice it right away, but if you check after an hour or so, it will be there. Now, sometimes it may take more than an hour. I would find that my water pump leaked when I went out the next morning. On a side note, if you do not have enough coolant in your vehicle, it may not leak, and could of course cause other problems if you do not have enough coolant to keep the engine cool.

There are a number of hints that can signal failure. The obvious ones are when the pump fails catastrophically and causes rapid water loss, the fan wobbles and possible damages the radiator, etc.
However, that is not always the case in impending failures. Squealing can be a sign of pump bearing failure. Pudding of coolant under the front center of the vehicle is a telltale sign of pump leakage. Water pumps have a "weep hole" that lets a small amount of coolant escape when the bearing sleeve is wearing out. But you can be losing coolant from the pump and not see the puddle because in the early stages of failure, the pump will only weep while running. Then the fan blows the coolant back onto the block where it evaporates. You can look for the weep hole on the bottom side of the water pump where the shaft enters the sleeve. Look for signs of coolant streaking or small gatherings of coolant on engine parts just below the pump. The primary consideration is that there is coolant going missing. You may be able to remove the serpentine belt and wiggle the pump shaft to see if there is any side-to-side play in it. There should be none.

Waterpump went out and now there's water in the oil - what's wrong?

Water pumps are notorious for sudden failure without any warning. Often the first sign of trouble is a light on the dash board telling you your engines in running very hot. If you have covered a considerable distance you might have done further damage to the engine. we had an old vehicle were this happened. The engine had a system where the oil and water ran either side of a thin metal membrane about the engine. I am no expert, but I fear you have cracked that division between the water and oil

How do I tell if the water pump went out on my 93 dodge spirit 2.5 without waiting for the head gasket to blow??

When the water pump is out there are a couple of tell tale signs that will let you know. The first of which, is that the pump will leak, or wobble, or sometimes both. The second sign, is that the water in the radiator will not circulate, and this can be observed by removing the cap while the car is cold, cranking the car, and then letting the engine warm up. After you have done this, you should see water/antifreeze flowing if the pump is good, if it is not, then you have a pump issue, or possibly a radiator issue.

The water pump went out and the car overheated. Now the car won't start. I've changed the pump, replaced melted spark plug connectors, I don't see any signs of water in the oil. What could be wrong

Please remove all the plugs and check the firing on all individually. Now see that your fuel lines are good and make sure there is fuel distribution into the cylinder., If there was an over flow make sure that it was pumped out when the plugs weere removed. Now since you have confirrmed that the cylinder has not cracked, the plugs must be set back and tried. Hope the fuel pump is working fine- since you had a very hot engine, otherwise this can be the culprit. Hope you try this out. Good day

I have 1998 740i BMW that is overheating. 1) What are the warning signs of a bad water pump? 2) What are the warning signs of a blown head gasket? 3) What are the warning signs of bad timing?

Timing - engine is not sounding right or back firing.
Head gasket - water and oil mixing, see inside water bottle. or open bottle. rev engine when cold, if starts spitting water out while cold like a fountain.
Water pump - Water leaking from side of engine. or when car started and water bottle is open and no circulation is visible could be signs of water pump
Remember - Block radiator lines can also cause over heating problems and lack of water circulation.
